Description

From the Academy Award winning director of A SEPARATION and the Academy Award nominated THE SALESMAN comes this mesmerizing thriller about a young woman’s mysterious disappearance. With the return of their close friend Ahmad from Germany, a group of old college pals decide to reunite for a weekend outing by the Caspian Sea. The fun starts right away as they catch on to the plan of Sepideh, who has brought along Elly, her daughter's kindergarten teacher, in hopes of setting her up with recently divorced Ahmad. But seemingly trivial lies, which start accumulating from the moment the group arrives at the seashore, come back to haunt them when one afternoon Elly suddenly vanishes. Her disappearance sets in motion a series of deceptions and revelations that threaten to shatter everything they hold dear.

Actually I was not very interested in drama genre, but this movie was a turning point and changed my idea. The plot was great, the acting was terrific, and the director is an experienced person (the director of "A Separation" and "The Salesman" movies). I really enjoy Golshifte Farahani & Taraneh Alidoosti's play. In one word: "Great and Unique drama movie"...

The characters came to life for me, and I forgot that I was reading subtitles. I became completely engrossed in this story! It’s a foreign film - I think you’ll either love it or hate it.

I had very high hopes, very; when I watched the trailer it seemed like the movie to watch for great suspense—finding Elly. As I started watching it, first of all, very shaky film, Good, yet shaky—let's pass that., the buildup was good, not the best but adequately good, introducing the characters during the right moments, and then finding out the truth about Elly; which was a SHOCK. But, her disappearance didn't get me—saying that I really didn't fall in love for the character in order to worry about her. I was more worried about the main character (forgot her name already) but she's on the cover, I was worried whether she was going to get beaten, killed, hurt or drown or get sick—hell if she would've disappeared I would've cared more. But for Elly...I really didn't care about her disappearance. Finding out the errors what the main character did, and hiding the TRUTH, was a shocker and kept me wanting to know more (that was the suspense). The ending—awful, could've been better; like I understand why she drowned, or perhaps my theory is wrong. That she drowned because she was upset with herself for what she's done (spoiler alert) to her fiancé and to the guy she was falling for, so she committed suicide. OR, she actually went to save the kid and drowned because of the waves were to strong., either way, knowing that it was her body at the end, was upsetting way to end the movie. I expected that she was kidnapped; now that would've taken a great turn of events—but just my thoughts. Lastly overall, the movie was good, fooled me with the suspense from the trailer, which it wasn't that suspended, and it could've been better. Not 5star material, and most definitely not a second watch movie. More of a watch once and done—therefore, I wish I hadn't bought the movie and only rented it.

Okay, so a quick warning, there are semi-spoilers ahead. First off, this film isn't a thriller. The entire story turned out to be incredibly weak. I was incredibly disappointed with this movie, as I am a big fan of foreign films. I was expecting there to be a twist in the ending, where the friend was lying and making it appear like Elly died, so that Elly could escape her fiance and start a new life. I kept waiting for it, thinking I had it figured out, but what I got instead was a waste of $3.99 for a rental that proved to be long, boring, and a complete waste of my time. I don't usually write harsh reviews on anything, but I really felt cheated with this film.
  • What a waste of time

This movie is billed as a thriller. It is not. It is a drama that makes commentary on Persian relationships. Well, I could care less about Persian relationships. What I do care about is wasting two hours waiting for the “thriller” part of this movie to emerge which it never does. It drones on like waves in the sea. We kept waiting for a surprise, a twist or a revelation that would surprise us. Yes, there are turns in the movie, but they only serve to momentarily confuse you. This movie was similar in pace to the M. Night Shyamalan movie, the Happening, in pace. It just never delivers.
  • Outstanding.

This is not a film for the masses, but independent + foreign film lovers will dig it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Really good.
