Description

Back with his first film in 8 years, legendary Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien wowed this year's Cannes Film Festival (where he won Best Director) with his awe-inspiring THE ASSASSIN - a wondrous take on the traditional wuxia film. The story is simple, if elusive - in 9th-century China, Nie Yinniang is a young woman who was abducted in childhood from a decorated general and raised by a nun who trained her in the martial arts. After 13 years of exile, she is returned to the land of her birth as an exceptional assassin, with orders to kill her betrothed husband-to-be. She must confront her parents, her memories, and her long-repressed feelings in a choice to sacrifice the man she loves or break forever with the sacred way of the righteous assassins. Rich with shimmering, breathing texture and punctuated by brief but unforgettable bursts of action, THE ASSASSIN is a martial arts film like none made before it.

  • The 5 star folks...

The people giving this 5 stars are, I think, trying hard to convince themselves how intellectually, or artistically advanced they are. Yes, there is achingly beautiful cinematography, incredible landscapes that the director must have, at times, waited for days to get just the right weather conditions for the shot. There are wonderful costumes that would be at home in a museum of textiles. The actors are all very camera friendly. But the almost complete absence of a storyline, combined with practically zero character development make this a chore to sit through in spite of it’s visual beauty. If you are on the fence, as I was, please don’t bother unless you are prepared for a pretty film that goes absolutely nowhere.
  • Very slow and not much action

Filming is beautiful and actors are amazing...but this film is way too slow and doesn’t explain or show everything as much as I feel it should. Looks like it is freezing up most of the time due to it moving so slow. It’s a shame...it could have been so much more!

As I watched this film, it reminded me of “the Seventh Seal”, another classic. If you cannot understand Ingmar Bergman’s film, you may not appreciate this classic either. Stunning silence interwoven into dialogue and action.
  • No sub-titles ugh

Each time I watch this I understand more. While it is true that you have to fill in the blanks plot-wise, the plot is the least important aspect of the film. It’s a movie about character. Told with exceptional beauty and subtlety. No ludicrous wire-action fantasy, this is a story about a warrior who discovers what she stands for and has the backbone to make it so. Phenomenal.
  • Warning. Art film. Slow and incomprehensible.

I'm still not quite sure what I just watched but at least I can say I've never seen anything quite like it.
