Description

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

Hoe. Lee. Crap. What just happened to my eyes, my brain, my senses? There is no other film that I have ever seen that even comes close to comparison with this spellbinding, mystical and mysterious b&w masterpiece, Embrace of the Serpent. I didn't know films like this could be made anymore. You know what? It makes me loathe Hollywood big budget productions and the insanely compensated actors that headline them. I promise you, this film will transport you to another universe, and possibly another spiritual realm, if you allow it to envelop you and breathe new life into your body like the shaman's opiate powder blown up the nose of the "white". Not all experiences are pleasant, however. Much like a dream (a thread line throughout this insane motion picture), you may experience nightmarish visions. (By the way, if ever a film was truly warranted an "Unrated" designation, this would probably be the one.) Some scenes make you sick to your stomach - savagery at its most primeval. But, Good and Evil are most certainly present here, and shall naught be repeated, lest it influence your decision to see this work of art. I could go on and on, friends, but seeing is believing, is it not? Or, better yet, dreaming is believing....

A truly beautiful film that shows the heart of the exploited indigenous tribes and nature.

This movie is magical. I'm not one of those people that uses that to describe things willy nilly, and I mean it when I say it. All of the reviews that say that it will transport you, are spot on. The narrative is a little different than you're used to, but when it all comes together...it's truly beautiful. Don't be scared by how long it is, spend the $7 or $8, and get ready for something truly different.

Beautiful, poetic, and sad; it is Oscar worthy.

Story of a Shaman who first losses his tribe, then his memory. Has a touch of "Heart of Darkness" theme to it. Strange yet touching.
