Description

Knight of Cups follows writer Rick (Christian Bale, The Fighter, American Hustle) on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self. Even as he moves through a desire-laden landscape of mansions, resorts, beaches and clubs, Rick grapples over complicated relationships with his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy). His quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women: rebellious Della (Imogen Poots); his physician ex-wife, Nancy (Cate Blanchett); a serene model Helen (Freida Pinto); a woman he wronged in the past Elizabeth (Natalie Portman); a spirited, playful stripper Karen (Teresa Palmer); and an innocent Isabel (Isabel Lucas), who helps him see a way forward.

I love Christian his acting is always good. The movie was slow, and not interesting. I watched 1/2 and didn't bother watching the rest.

agreeing with danielb121212's review....some good landscapes and beautiful people.....but, deep first time viewed and not too repeat too much of what daniel said but, dreamy, slow paced, disjointed film.
  • Not as bad (or good) as the reviews I've read here

Yes, the imagery is gorgeous (having this cast helps), which is par for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Yes, The Knight of Cups is rambling and overly long for the subject matter presented. However, the concept of a search for love and fulfillment is presented in a stream of consciousness manner that only Terrence Malick would attempt; problem is the lack of discipline in the presentation - which may be a reflection of being past one's prime. Overall, a good watch for those who wish to see an experienced film-maker's visual/artistic take on landscapes, city scapes, the human (especially female) form and human interaction - for good and for bad - but still beautiful. If you are looking for a story-based film, skip this one.
  • Mental terror!

This is an eternal, incoherent picture-salad mixed up with the ramblings of Christian Bale: An Elvis Presley imitator in full Vegas attire, Christian Bale taking steps next to a pelican, a dog hunting for a tennisball in a swimming-pool, a naked girl on a balcony! Ehh what? You guessed it: There is no storyline and it is just a mess. Very disappointing. It is quite painful to watch and I would prefer to watch grass grow. It was actually so annoying that I had to skip the last 30 minutes - I simply couldn't do it! My advise: Just say NO!
  • Trying to be weird

An example of what happens when an artist tries to be weird and deep. It simply feels contrived and uninteresting. Shallow.
  • Incredibly beautiful cinematography by 3-time academy award winner, Chivo L.

Malick makes movies that are the closest thing I've seen on film to subjective memories and sense impressions. "Tree of Life" was a beautiful example of this, and "Knight of Cups" is as well. This film is one of the most beautifully shot films I can remember seeing. Everything comes together visually--the lighting, the fluid, always-moving camera, the editing, the color palette in a way that you rarely see in modern cinema. Though I really have no idea what the film means and only a slightly better idea of what it's about, I bought it simply so I could watch and study the imagery. If you want to use your HD display for something really gorgeous, watch this.
  • Don't do it

Thought it would be an artsy Hollywood parable like 'Somewhere' but instead it was a faux existential fever dream with some recognizable actors.

Yuk, boring, not anything going for it. Shallow. Acid Trip, a bad one!
  • Christian Bale Close Up With a Wide Angle Lens

My review: It's like this guy learned film making from watching Calvin Klein commercials in the 90s. My wife's review: Everyone in this film is dumber than me, but has better real estate. I think the camera man got bored about half way through shooting and was like, "I got a wide angle lens, whatever, everything is in frame. Whoops, sorry I wasn't pointing the camera at you Christian, I was ordering a pizza, do you want any?" Also, some lady below said, "Knight of Cups is like wandering through an art gallery." With the state of contemporary art, I would say that's a pretty good assessment.

Whoooooooa! If you’re looking for a dreamy, slow-paced, disjointed film with no plot (note: NO PLOT), this film is for you. If you’re like me and thought the negative reviews had to be wrong and this film would be entertaining because of the talent that’s in it and the beautiful trailer…I hate to say it, but skip it. It’s aesthetically pleasing, but man! it’s boring!
