Description

Nothing else has ever looked or felt like director René Laloux’s animated marvel Fantastic Planet, a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence.

Allegory Sci Fi plot of an alien race of beings treating humans as pets & pest, only to discover they are far more intelligent than they suspected. Told via cutout, stop motion, animation that fits the plot perfectly. More artwork than story. Is worthy of "The Criterion Collection" selection.

If you're a fan of classic, Western hand drawn animation, especially sci-fi or fantasy, then you've got the following in your collection: Heavy Metal, Yellow Submarine, Fritz the Cat, and American Pop, at the least. You've GOT to get this beautifully animated 1973 French-Canadian release about the rebellion of a group of humanoids against their much bigger alien masters, the Draags. Stop motion paper cutouts, fantastic landscapes, and surreal dreamscapes are some of the many charms of Fantastic Planet.

Drugs do not produce transcendent experiences, they merely act as a chemical key - to open the mind , free the nervous system of it's ordinary patterns and structures. There ARE ways to transcend without drugs; one small but important example: THE FANTASTIC PLANET . Beautiful.
