Description

In this unbelievably tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner’s mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals - suspicion which quickly turns to hysteria as the townspeople begin killing each other in brutal outbursts for seemingly no reason. As the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he agrees to consult a shaman for answers - unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous. Over six years in the making, director Na Hong-jin’s meticulously crafted follow-up to the globally acclaimed THE YELLOW SEA and THE CHASER (his third to premiere at the Festival de Cannes) smashed box office records upon its debut in South Korea, where fans are already making return viewings to catch new clues and debate what’s sure to be the most talked-about ending of 2016.

I’m wailing I’ve wasted my time and money for this low budget special effects horror flick. Not entertaining

Some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seen, great atmosphere and acting. However there are some major details in the story that do not make sense. So much so that it almost ruins it. Not scary but a dope film.

If you are a horror movie fan you need to see this! The subtitles don’t ruin the horror. It is a bit long at 2.5 hours but the end is well worth the wait.

Movie dragged on forever...typical horror flick which will leave you screaming at the television in response to the foolish policemen and poor intelligence of the main characters...Not on the level of Train to Buscan.
  • Nice imagery, but ...

I was looking forward to this movie, but (as others have noted) the incompetence of the police was a problem, and it feels like the "message" behind the movie was more disturbing than the movie itself. One foreign stranger, and he's immediately (and xenophobically) blamed for everything that's happening. Unsettling enough, but I was waiting for a twist that never arrived. Nope.

Hong-jin Na brings the old tale of "good vs. evil" in this terrifying and high-paced thriller "The Wailing". Korean cinema has really taken off lately and even though Hong-jin took six years to write this masterpiece, it was worth the wait. The devil does exist in the details and every scene keeps you on the edge of your seat, making you guess twice. The actors are well portrayed and very believable, giving the audience a good run for their money. Pay attention to the story, because it can easily be misread.
