What a bad movie ! The trailer was funny and I thought the movie will be a good surprise but not at all. I felt bored, disgusted by the character. Dialogues are so poor not even funny. I can't believe I've spend my money for this sh....

As a lover of quirky indies, I instantly wanted to watch this movie as soon as I saw the trailer. I want to establish something: I don't mean that I just casually or occasionally watch odd independent films, I mean they are the movies I actively seek out, from the absurd to realist to the offbeat. I love them all. I say this to explain that it's not that this movie just didn't suit my tastes. It is actually objectively BAD. 5 minutes in I realized how terrible it was; however, my husband insisted we continue watching it as we had paid $7 to rent it. We actually paused this terrible movie multiple times to argue over whether the wasted time would be worse than wasting the money we spent to rent this monstrosity. My husband won, and we finished the movie. Afterwards, my husband's only conciliation was we could now say we had seen this steaming pile of garbage, and we both have a new least favorite movie EVER.

All of us feel at times like a lemon tree in a garden of beautiful flowers - as the song at the end of the movie says. This is a movie about Isaac, a man at odds with himself and the world. Isaac and his disfunctional behavior is the source of much grief and frustration for himself and for many of the people he encounters in his life. It is to the writers and director's credit that Isaac's behavior is at times so cruel and offensive that it is difficult to like anything about him as the movie progresses. But I could not help but have some sympathy for him, as his own agony at his constant failure to connect and develop enriching relationships with the people in his life is at least as great as the discomfort he gives to others. Yes, this movie is at times very funny - if you have a sense of humor that recognizes and celebrates the absurd, the ironic, and the just plain crazy aspects of our relationships with our families, friends and work colleagues. There are many sly pokes at the business of show business - Megan Mullally does a wickedly funny turn as a commercial director - and Isaac's interactions with his students in an acting class is obviously based on many real, unpleasant people encountered by writers and director. Michaeal Cera is wonderful as a self-absorbed actor who attempts to befriend Issac, with disasterous consequences. Brett Gelman's performance as Isaac is mesmerizing and nuanced enough to make me root for him to succeed in life, even as some of his behavior went beyond eccentric to qualify as alarming. It is a pleasure to see a movie that addresses the uncomfortable, disfunctional realities of life for a person who doesn't fit in, and does it in a way that shows he is trying, and doesn't merely dismiss him as a monster and misfit who deserves his fate. There is a humor and humanity in this movie that is very commendable and difficult to pull off, given the repellent nature of Isaac's behavior at times. To Janicza Bravo (director) and Brett Gelman (Isaac), and to all of the people who worked on this film as a labor of love with little prospect for a wide theater release: thank you for this movie.

Made me effin' squirm so, naturally... I loved it. Cera was classic in this. Everybody nailed this. Direction was spot on.

And my time? Truly a horrible movie. I'm getting old. I've seen countless movies. Trust me. Don't waste your time nor money on this trash heap of a movie.

I couldn't finish it. Gelman really does have one of the most punchable faces out there. This was too pretentious. I like quirky but this tried way too hard.

Last 15 minutes probably the most interesting part of the movie... I love an off color, dark comedy but this tried to achieve something that in my opinion... it just didn't.
  • Hard to follow story line, very boring

I'm not sure what they were going for here. The poor man in the movie appears to be suffering from Asperger Syndrome and everything and I do mean EVERYTHING in his life continues on a path to hell. The ending of this movie is one of those where you sit there wondering WHY?. Why did it end at this particular point and why are we left with unanswered questions. Nothing remarkable in this movie and really nothing that humorous. Unless you get a laugh out of watching someones life deteriorate, this movie has nothing for you. I gave it three stars because of the actors.

Uncompelling meta white-male quirk. Doesn't have to be likeable or entertaining (see Rick Alverson) but at least make it interesting to watch...
