Description

Over 12 billion miles from Earth, a gangly ship sails through interstellar space. It is, by far, the most distant object made by human hands. In 1977, NASA launched twin Voyager spacecraft. An emotional, cinematic documentary, The Farthest tells their story through first-hand accounts from the passionate men and women who built the ships and guided their journeys. Negotiating a series of perils on its Grand Tour of the outer planets, Voyager beamed back spectacular images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. But their moons offered bigger surprises—volcanoes, geysers, and a liquid water ocean. On the chance of discovery by intelligent aliens, each spacecraft carried a Golden Record with music and spoken greetings. The mission has earned its place in the pantheon of human achievements. Long after our sun has flamed out, the Voyagers are likely to be sailing on, perhaps the only evidence that we ever existed.

This is excellent. Especially if you fully listen to all of the professional commentators that were involved in the history of the Voyager missions.

This was well worth the time. We are indeed just a tiny tiny speck of dust in space. With such short lives we have, let’s enjoy and take good care of each other and our world.

What a meaningful enterprise! Exploring the outer planets of the solar system for the first with the best technology we had at the time. Great teamwork, engineering, and execution. we should have spent $12 billion and sent 6 space craft instead of 2, charting multiple paths with as many experiments as we come dream up.

Exploration of space appeals to a child in all of us. This story of humanity trying to find a purpose is poetic.

Wonderful historical documentary, in the flavor of "In The Shadow of the Moon" (which I wish was available in iTunes). A recounting, in their own words, of how the craft came to be, by many of the scientists and engineers involved.

This film did a fantastic job of making someone who knows nothing about space appreciate what NASA JPL can do. You can really tell that these engineers and scientists absolutely love what they do. Got emotional at times too!
