Description

They say she was beautiful. A dream. But for all her good looks, she was also a killer. Spitfire is an epic, sweeping tale of determination, vision and courage. It is the story of an airplane that was forged in competition, shaped as the war clouds gathered, and refined in the white heat of combat – going on to become the most famous fighter plane ever made. Credited with changing the course of world history, this is the story of the Spitfire – told in the words of the last-surviving combat veterans. With stunning aerial footage from the world’s top aviation photographer, the film also contains rare, digitally re-mastered, archive footage from the tumultuous days of the 1940's when her power in the skies was unrivaled. Spitfire also explores how this extraordinary plane thrives today and how it has become an international icon.

Just watch this to understand how a piece of extraordinary machinery changed the course of history. Filmed with deep affection for those who flew it to save a country and those who fly it now to save the plane. At times very moving.

The spitfire has its undeniable place in history, but . . . Plane that saved the world? Most famous fighter plane ever? Can you say P-51 Mustang!

A great documentary on the heros that fought for peace in the Spitfire and Hurricane, often times flying mulitple sorties every day while exhausted, but pressing on to fight off the enemy onslaught. I had no idea that the Spitfire was improved so many times, from the first Spitfire design all the way to Spitfire XXI. Just watching this for the amazing aerial video work was worth it! A well done documentary about the Battle for Britain and the vital role the Spitfire played in the success for freedom. God bless the brave airmen of England, and the airmen from other countries that came to England's aide. Also, we shouldn't forget the brave women that flew the Spitfires from the factories to RAF airfields.

This is a well put together film. Beautiful modern footage along with historical footage makes this an easy documentary to watch. Pilots tell a few good stories along the way. In a world If way too many cheesy documentaries, this one is first class. Loved it!

By far the best documentary I’ve ever seen. This should be shown in schools far and wide as a concrete example of determination and what is possible when a country comes together.
  • too much flying too little details

I was hoping for a little less flying around and more details about the plane such as more about the RR engines, machine guns, flying arch, glide path, etc. The interviews were ok but seriously it was about the plane not the pilots

I did like this film, and it is well worth watching just for the photography and the interviews with the veterans. So if you are into aircraft history don’t miss it. Still, “The plane that saved the world” is a little over the top. The German high command blew the Battle of Brittan by shifting away from the English airfields to the English Cities. But all that aside, there are a few airplanes that did just as much as the Spitfire to save Europe at least. What if the Douglas TBD Devastator and Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless had never been built? The USA loses Midway and Japan takes Hawaii and the Aleutians just eight months after the Battle of Brittan. Since the British were essentially defeated in Asia, the USA’s involvement in North Africa and Europe would have been delayed by years while the Japanese threat was addressed by the US alone. The Soviet Union would have overrun Europe after Kursk.
