Description

In early 18th-century England, a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her closest friend, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), governs the country while tending to Anne’s health. When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, Sarah takes Abigail under her wing as she cunningly schemes to return to her aristocratic roots, setting off an outrageous rivalry to become the Queen’s favourite.

I very much enjoyed this film. It seems there are far longer periods between movies I see in which I come across one that surprises me. This offering provides much to take in and is a far cry from most of the fluff I'm seeing for offer. The directing and acting were perfect. Cinematography despite being unconventional is very effective and quite beautiful. The same could be said of the soundtrack. Costuming, locations and lighting all served the story well. Comparisons to current events or past productions could be made but they would likely only distract from a work which should be experienced without preconceptions.

I gave it four stars because the acting was brilliant, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone especially are amazing as rivals. However... it's not a comedy as advertised. It's dark and sad and none of the main characters have any redeeming qualities. That is, I'm not rooting for anyone to win except maybe England. At the end I'm not sure what the point of the story was, what lesson I learned or gained from it, only that I was left feeling sad: for Rachel Weisz's character surprisingly. All on all, it's not a waste of time, it's a good movie, just know what you're getting into and it's not fun or light.

This movie was a spectacular mess! I loved it. The ending was a bit to think about but the story, characters, and costuming were just incredible. Olivia Coleman is truly a Queen. This was truly one of her best!
  • Disappointing non-comedy

The trailer is the only comedy in this dark and ugly movie. Don’t waste money on yet another Hollywood flop.
