When a school-yard scuffle lands Charlie (Gregor Selkirk) in her surgery, she invites him to visit the hives in her garden and tell his secrets to the bees, as she once did. The new friendship between the boy and the bee keeper brings his mother Lydia (Holliday Grainger) into Jean’s world. In the sanctuary of the doctor’s house, the two women find themselves drawn to one another in a way that Jean recognizes and fears, and Lydia could never have expected. But, in 1950’s small-town Britain, their new secret can’t stay hidden forever.

Hollywood is making movies just to make them. This was soooo boring.
  • Took out everything that made it special

As just a movie it was ok, basically like every other romance between women on screen. But compared to the book it was really mediocre. Somethings I understand they changed for the sake of timing but they changed a majority of the main plot points, I think in an attempt to make them more severe because you don’t have the build up of the book but it still ruined the story. They made everything way more difficult than it needed to be and then for some reason made the bees some sort of mystical magical being, like I get it it’s symbolism but the bees were almost laughable at some points. In fact it’s cheesy as all hell. All in all the story is mediocre, if you read the book look out, if you didn’t, read it instead. I will say that the women, aside from the actress who plays jean, were all cast pretty well especially the one who plays Lydia I think she carried a lot of the movie. In conclusion they screwed up a very unique and awesome story by making it like everything else out there and trying to spice it up with bees. (Also why in the world couldn’t they find an actual Scottish actress or at least one who can do a convincing accent for Jean!!)

This movie had so much potential, the book was very good. The end went off of the rails a bit, the books conclusion made more sense. In more capable hands, it would have been better, too bad.
