Description

THE BRINK follows Steve Bannon for a year leading up to the 2018 mid-term elections in the United States, shedding light on his efforts to mobilize and unify far-right parties in order to win seats in the May 2019 European Parliamentary elections. To maintain his power and influence, the former Goldman Sachs banker and media investor reinvents himself - as he has many time before - this time as the self-appointed leader of a global populist movement. A keen manipulator of the press and gifted self-promoter, Bannon continues to draw headlines and protests wherever he goes, feeding the powerful myth on which his survival relies.

What Bannon, Trump and the far-right of the world keenly observe and understand, that most of the rest of us don’t, is one of the fundamental human psyche and insight that all people are nationalist. I.e., our “country” is such a deep and integral part of who we are, or who we perceive ourselves to be, that it often bypasses our surface-level, day-to-day active mind. (This case is laid out in detail in John Mearsheimer’s, ‘the tragedy of great power politics’ and ‘the great delusion’.) In this sense, they’re only acting on behalf of everyone’s(people they represent/serve) best interest rather than acting against any, or multiple, “other” group(s). And it is only logical. Until that someday, when we can see ourselves as more than, or other than, our physical bodies, along with any other “concepts” of ourselves(which is a very tough challenge even for most of the most enlightened spiritual gurus), Bannon, Trump & co. will continue, it seems, to wield its newly found sword of insight(or point of manipulation/advantage) and continue making deep impact around the world.

A unique portrait of one of the key architects of our oppressive times. Scarily important must-see!

This is an absolute must watch documentary. Fascinating to watch Bannon behind the scenes where he doesn't seem to hold anything back and you get to see how truly evil he is. If you want to see how we ended up in such a mess as a country, this will help give some insight. My favorite part of course was when the GOP lost the 2018 Midterm Elections and hearing from the Freshmen Women was glorious!
  • A fascinating MUST watch

This film takes us on an odyssey... from the opening scene which sets us up so beautifully for the chilling story the filmmakers set out to tell, to the razor sharp intellect of the press that push back (#PaulLewis from The Guardian is my new hero and I immediately followed him on Twitter), to Klayman's knowledge and chemistry with Bannon - mostly thru the camera, but also in the few times we hear her - and even tho she challenges him piercingly, she has an obvious affection for him...as you see many who know him have for him as well. He has charisma, and he is highly intelligent - which is why when she and Paul Lewis challenge that -despite his denials - he knows what he's doing, it gets to the poignant, painful soul of Steve Bannon, who could be so much more, if his need to _______ (matter? that he's still a bit of an enigma is a credit to the film)- didn't overshadow it. Like him or not, Steve Bannon is an American Original, and the filmmakers show us my kind of patriotism, fighting not only for our country in this quiet - yet also not -way, but also the world. I laughed all kinds of laughter throughout..mostly derisive - and I was the only one. Ha. I highly recommend this film...and yeah yeah, I was hard pressed to want to sit thru a Steve Bannon movie, but I guarantee it's worth it...and the end is a great payoff that even surprised me at how much I needed it.

THE BRINK is an incredibly powerful film about everything going on in our crazy world today from the everyman-ness of evil, to the parasitic and symbiotic and mutually exploitative relationship between the media and those who call it the “enemy of the people”, to the rise in worldwide fascism, to the way paranoid delusions can suddenly become real political agendas, to the way really bad ideas and cruelty and ugliness can take root in really smart and all too human people, to the difference between filmmaking and propaganda, and finally to what you can learn when a brave and brilliant filmmaking team really speaks truth to power and power speaks back in quiet conversation when it seems like nobody else is listening. Please watch this movie!
