Description

At a remote lake house, a filmmaker named Allison (Aubrey Plaza) arrives to play house guest to a troubled couple (Abbott and Gadon), who have eschewed their life in the city after inheriting a family retreat. Battling writer's block, Allison sparks a calculated game of desire and jealousy in pursuit of a new work that blurs the boundaries of autobiography and invention. Black Bear explores the complex nature of relationships, gender dynamics, and the erratic nature of love as it traces the conflict between our lust and our longing for internal harmony.

The film starts with three people who irritate one another. Then the film shifts to a larger cast who irritate on another. No one is really compelling and I'm irritated at myself for not bailing on this... whatever it is.
  • Very good!

If you enjoyed the series "Losing Alice" you will like "Black Bear". Regarding the critical ratings here: this film definitely has a non-linear narrative so you might want to watch it a second time if you think it "made no sense". And a fantastic performance by Aubrey Plaza.
  • Really enjoyed it

Don’t listen to the bad reviews. I found it to be an interesting take on Hollywood, manipulation and how easy it for certain types of people to adopt different personas. It also has some interesting things to say about how creative people deal with pain. The ending doesn’t have quite the payoff it thinks it has and the meta upon meta concept that the movie ultimately devolves into makes the ending kind of pointless and a bit frustrating but it’s an interesting character driven ride and Aubrey Plaza really delivers some outstanding work in this movie. Definitely worth the rental price (I may even buy this on blu ray) if you are open to a well-filmed, acerbic, well-written and well-acted soapy drama with a sardonic edge that only Aubrey can deliver. I recommend it!
  • Boring. Terribly boring.

All these reviews? I simply disagree. This film is extremely boring. The actors are great talents but not for this one. It does not have it.
  • Awful. A tedious and pointless film.

I cant even put into words with how immensely proud & stunned i was by aubrey’s performance here, as a fan of hers since 2011, and someone who’s seen nearly every project of hers, this is easily her best work yet.
  • Huh?!?
