Description

The Empty Man is a supernatural horror film filled with action, suspense and sheer terror! After teenagers from a small Midwestern town begin to mysteriously vanish, the locals begin to suspect that their disappearances may somehow be tied to a terrifying local legend. Thrust out of retirement, James Lasombra (James Badge Dale), a troubled former cop still reeling from the deaths of his own wife and son, begins to investigate the events that have shaken this community. Things take a bizarre turn when Lasombra discovers a secretive group of occultists who seem to be attempting to bring forth a horrific, mystical entity. Before long, Lasombra realizes that his life — and the lives of those close to him — are in terrible danger in this white-knuckle chiller. The Empty Man also stars Marin Ireland, Stephen Root, Ron Canada, Robert Aramayo, Joel Courtney and Sasha Frolova. Directed by David Prior from his screen story and screenplay based on Cullen Bunn’s novel.

This is a truly engrossing movie with excellent casting and acting. There are a few inconsistencies and mildly lame aspects to the plot, but these deficiencies are relatively minor. The concept artwork for the skeleton and Empty Man by Ken Barthelmy is superb. A solid 4.5 stars. Highly recommended.

Atmospheric horror that lingers in your imagination long afterwards. The director spent time working with David Fincher and it’s reflected in tone and style. Highly recommended for fans of thoughtful horror that eschews the typical horror tropes and aims for something unique.

I am not going to sugar-coat this review. Watch it for the fact that this film takes elements of film mechanics as tools and uses them PROPERLY. This director is no slouch, he has had years of experience learning from all of the greats and it is more than apparent he paid close attention. Bravo sir, I doubt you'll ever see this, but thank you, yes, I get it. Every frame is a piece of art if you really look at it. I am glad this one squeaked through the portcullis of corporate decision making and allow a real film to be released. I'm sad it has been treated badly, but this is how legends are made over time. I haven't enjoyed much in recent years, but this is memorable. The seed is planted, it will definitely grow. Make more!

The overall plot of this movie never really comes together. What’s it about? A mythological Tibetan monster? A doomsday cult? The fragility of human morality? The subjective nature of reality? Who knows? I don’t think the film’s creators even know. For over two hours the film wanders aimlessly from one underdeveloped subplot to the next. When it finally, mercilessly, does come to an end, few of the subplots are ever resolved.
