In this true-life Cold War spy thriller, unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes entangled in one of the greatest international conflicts in history. Recruited by MI6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), Wynne forms a covert partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze), and both men risk everything in a danger-fraught race against time to provide the intelligence needed to prevent nuclear confrontation and end the Cuban Missile Crisis.

This masterpiece has amazing acting by Cumberbatch, a well-written script, brilliant set designs and lighting, and much more importantly captures the heart of these true events. I found the first half interesting and the last half absolutely captivating.
  • Throwback

A solid meat-and-potatoes spy thriller. More films like this need to be made. Hollywood has forgetten this genre!
  • Yawn ....

Yawn, yawn, yawn, yawn, yawn. yawn. And Mrs Maizel is a New York stand-up comic. Not a super-spy. Just does not work.
  • Calm down people!

All you people screaming blue murder over the $20 rental cost…that about the same as theater tickets for 2 people. If you are still uptight about it then don’t rent the day it comes out. Now, just 2 months later it is 5.99.
  • Worth it

Watched this on a flight from DC to LA. Engrossing, well acted and well done. I was hesitant with some reviews; but the lack of action and car chases notwithstanding, a very good movie. There was intrigue and the characters and story drew me in. Well worth it. Oscar contender for Cumberbatch!! Well done.
  • Good reluctant hero spy movie

Brings to light an important untold tale from the Cold War. It was better than the preview would lead you to believe.
  • Not Good

What a bore. Slow, feels like one of those movies based on true events that air on The History Channel. I can’t believe this film was given the green light with such big actors and studio.

Good movie, not the best spy movie by any means but worth the time to watch at least once
  • Could Not Suspend Disbelief

    By Steve Denson
This movie may be based on a true story, but the interpretation forces the discriminating viewer to suspend too much disbelief in order to accept the plot. The characters conduct themselves in ways not believable in a setting of espionage and counterintelligence. Example: why would a courier meet in public on many occasions with known CIA and MI6 officers? Both sides would have agents watching the suspected courier's every move and would note all the lunches they had and with whom.
