Description

To be called the Fittest on Earth, one would have to be capable of conquering a number of both physical and mental challenges. In the year of 2020, those challenges were plentiful. "Resurgence" captures all the drama as the organization of CrossFit pivots to pull off an in-person event amidst a world pandemic. Developing a new competition format to narrow a large field of athletes to only 5 men and 5 women. These athletes descend on a small ranch in California to take on whatever challenges are necessary to be crowned the Fittest on Earth.

As a fan of the Buttery Bros documentaries and subscriber to their YouTube channel, I love their content - the energy, behind the scenes access, and relationships they have with the competitors, coaches, and staff make for great content. I think, as others have commented, that the pandemic put them in a situation where the access to the key people throughout the competition leading up to the Games was lacking and frankly, as Jeffrey Adler noted, the competition itself was somewhat boring due to the undeniable dominance of Tia and Mat and the lack of spectators/hype at the Games. All in all, it’s worth a watch, but don’t expect a product similar to their other documentaries.

Really wanted to like it. I watch all of the CrossFit documentaries when they come out and usually several times each they're that good, but this one just didn't have the same effect. It lacked the athlete interactions that you usually get and really didn't show much emotion until the very end. And it jumps right into the games really without much discussion with athlete prep or any of that. Like I said I really wanted to like it and I watch all the buttery bros vlogs so it makes me sad to leave this review.

Lots of equity talk and propaganda in the middle. CrossFit is about everyone having a level playing field and working hard. I’m glad the Twitter controversy was addressed, but CrossFit has ALWAYS been an equal opportunity and inclusive community and the film seemed to imply it was not. It highlighted virtue signaling and big talk of quitting from athletes who knew they would never have to back it up.

The buttery bros did it again. They created another movie that capture not only the 2020 CrossFit games but the sport as a whole.
