Description

The story of Water begins in 1938 India as an 8 year old girl, who barely even remembers her wedding and has little comprehension of her marriage, has just been widowed. Required by ancient Hindu laws to now leave society, she is brought to a dilapidated widow house or ashram where, according to custom, her hair will be shorn, her clothes exchanged for white robes and the rest of her life, until her death, will be spent in renunciation. But the feisty, precocious, disbelieving Chuyia (Sarala) soon turns the house upside down with her rebellious spark. She begins to have a profound affect on the other women who live there, in particular the devout Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) and the beautiful Kalyani (Lisa Ray) who has been forced into prostitution by the domineering head widow, Madhumati (Manorama). It is Chuyia who leads Kalyani to meet the alluring law student and Gandhi nationalist Narayan (John Abraham), with whom Kalyani falls in love, despite the taboos. What happens next - an attempt at escape fueled by passion and bravery -- will change Chuyia forever and bring both tragedy and an unexpected ray of hope to the widow house.

I loved everything about this movie, from the story and the relationship between the characters to the beautiful background locations. The little girl stole the movie with a defiant strength and the honesty of a child that had me routing for her to triumph in the end. On another note, this is more of a chick flick. Not for guys like mine who expect action and car chases in every movie...oh well it's worth watching alone.

I watched this movie a few years ago after my Hindu family heard about it through temple friends. Throughout, the movie affected me and has remained the most potent film I've ever seen. The messages of religious cruelty and the heartbreaking depiction of child widowhood in early 1900s India strike me. Please watch this movie as a means to open your mind and develop empathy for those in less fortunate situations.

An absolutely first rate look at being human in an inhumane enviroment as people begin to wake up. Just sit back and enjoy a lotus not being stained by the mud it grows in.

This is a remarkable movie with fantastic acting about the role of women in India, and about the struggle for survival by a young girl trapped by barbaric customs. It is a tale of enormous courage and depravity, about the hights of generosity and the depths of conformism and exploitation. Anybody interested in the life of women anywhere should see this!

This movie really provoked me to think about women and our role in religion as interpreted by men. There is so much freedom in the USA that I fail to think about that sometimes. What can I do to help other women in other cultures to have the same freedom we have here? What are the limitations of our freedom in the USA as far as religion and the perception of our "place" in those practices? How do we as women help and hinder ourselves? Wonderful film!

This movie will forever be on my top five movies to see. I originally rented the movie from Blockbuster because the cover was interesting and I was indesperate need of a movie to watch. I'm very glad to have discovered this movie. It's a very powerful and captivating story. The filming and editing is exceptional and smooth. I highly recommend this movie. It will make you laugh and cry and leave you with a deep feeling that's ultimately indescribable.
