Description

An alcoholic falls in love with and gets married to a young woman, whom he systematically addicts to booze so they can share his "passion" together. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick star in this classic, bare-knuckled drama of a loving family torn apart by alcoholism.

This movie is one of the true Hollywood hidden gems. I can see why Gregory Peck felt Jack Lemmon deserved the Oscar over himself that year. HOW ABOUT HIGH DEFINITION APPLE ?????
  • A Poor Excuse for a Movie

This nearly two-hour movie is matinee-style melodrama. Jack Lemmon overacts, as usual, and Lee Remick is stiff as a board. The camera lingers way too long on blank facial expressions, intoxicated facial expressions, as if director Blake Edwards can't decide whether to make an art-house film, or a shocker. See CLEAN AND SOBER instead, if you like anti-abuse message movies. It's hard to believe that anyone ever took this movie seriously, even way back in 1962, when it came out.

This movie should not be missed. It shows just how frail we are as humans. Unforgettable performances by all.

Shattering performances from Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. This movie was the 'Requiem for a Dream' of 1962. Heartbreaking.
