I loved seeing this as a kid and while some think that this movie was horrible or too cheesy, I say it’s just good campy 80’s movie! ONJ still has a golden voice and the appearance of Legend Gene Kelly is a bonus pleasure! Don Bluth’s animation just adds to the story!

We all have e those movies that we love so much we watch them over and over until the VHS Tape broke. I did the same thing to Sgt. Peppers (BeeGees) also and of course our first VHS tape was Grease. Back then they cost around $100 for a VHS tape we only had Grease. Lol. Eventually within the year I think the price went down to a normal price. Anyway I have this on DVD but have no clue where it is and none of our players are hooked up. I’ll be flashing back to being a youngster again. Oh, I still love the music! ELO is awesome. So is Olivia NJ. Goodnight all!

I LOVED this movie! I watched Xanadu over and over...everytime (back then ) The Movie Channel played it on cable. It was a brown box that sat on your TV and slid the white piton back and forth over the numbers! Anyways I use to put on my roller skates and tuck a sheet around me like a flowing dress and roller skate just like ONJ as these tunes played. It’s amazing how simple life was back then in the 80s.

The soundtrack of my childhood. The film was definitely a delight if you were like a 2 year old Xennial like I was when this movie first came out. Didn’t see it in the theatres but watched it on VHS like 100 times when movie rentals started in the early 80’s and played the record repeatedly before someone broke it (I’ll never know.) I was basically in love with this movie. When times got and still get tough, I watch this film or listen to the soundtrack again and it takes me back to my own happy place, my own Xanadu. From a nostalgic standpoint, it takes me back to a more innocent time where dreams and the creative imagination were both strong. The movie is just that: dreamy and imaginative. The storyline is only more than just a simple love story. However, the music, the dancing between tap, ballet, jazz, and everything in between, the 80’s fashions (dresses, leg warmers, hair and makeup, the molding of genres from 40’s Big Band Hollywood Glamour to Roller-Disco, New Wave and ELO were nostalgic yet futuristic. Need I say more? Just watch it for the smorgasbord of sensory overload including a cute animated segment in between from Don Bluth. No wonder the script was simple because the visuals were so entertaining that one didn’t have time to think too deeply about the acting, plot and storyline, despite the fact that Michael Beck is not a bad actor in general, especially in other films prior to Xanadu. In addition, Gene Kelly is a class act, and Olivia Newton John is angelic. This movie definitely moves in light speed. In retrospect, I guess one might say that Xanadu was like watching a 90 minute music video before MTV even became a channel in 1981.

This musical has more than one problem added to it: it wasn't the true story of Xanadu - written by Samuel L. Coleridge back in the 1800s. This movie is nothing more than a dance routine and that's about it. The only actors that were really great in it were Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John - Michael Beck wasn't really that great, and it looked as if he was trying very hard to look the part in the movie. He failed and so did the movie, but the soundtrack was, and still is, fantastic! The reason for the three stars, is that I was hoping for much more than what the movie gave. Sadly, the Canadian rock group Rush did a far better job with their version of the song Xanadu - came out many years before ELO's version did, but their's was also well done. Needless to say, the writers should've been fired from their jobs just for the very, very poor screenwiting.

It is, and always will be, a five star film for me. My complaint is this itunes version is so low volume wise even with the volume set to the highest its sometimes hard to hear.
