Description

Sleek, well-dressed and polite, our hero (Daniel Craig) has made a fortune selling cocaine and ecstasy without really getting his hands dirty. Now he's looking to retire while he's young enough to enjoy his ill-gotten gains. But crime boss Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham) needs a couple of favors: The drug addict daughter of a mob overlord (Michael Gambon) has gone missing and Price wants her tracked down. Price also wants a middleman to buy a huge shipment of ecstasy from a loose-cannon crook called The Duke (Jamie Foreman). Sounds straightforward enough. But nothing's ever simple. With a renegade Serbian warlord thrown into the equation and a host of dangerous lowlifes out to help and hinder him, our hero soon realizes getting out of the drug business just might cost him everything. Including his life.

    I was hoping for more with this almost watchable cliched crime story. The music is hilariously overstated to great distraction. Every tense scene is layered with overly sentimental strings. Mournful choral selections appear almost at random. Gimme Shelter even makes a cameo! FC Kahuna and Craig Armstrong are the few musical highlights to the ridiculous score. On the later a nice B side is used to full effect (Hymn) but it is not enough to help Seven Layer Cake be palatable.

    Sure am glad I didn't buy this because I tend to favor movies that have coherent plot-lines. See if this rings a bell: The kind of movie that were you to break it up into twenty segments, each five minutes long...then watch any one of the aforementioned segments, you might think to yourself 'this looks like it might be good'. Unfortunately, watch any two concurrent segments and you'll possibly find yourself thinking -as I did- 'What is going on? What's the point of that? That makes no sense whatsoever. You've got to be kidding. Eventually you understand that it's not going to cohese, it won't get any better and the plot is rubbish.

    Save your money and rent a good Film Noir. This film is ridiculous. The actors mumble, the script flips and then flops. What we have here is..."a failure to communicate".

    I will say that I have no trouble with the fact that I spent 2 hours of my life watching this (which is more than I can say for many movies out there today), but in the end it was not a very satisfying movie. It was ok. It was different. But I didn’t really care about the characters, nor the story line, nor much else. I just didn’t care. I did like the acting of a couple of the actors. It’s “ok” in my opinion.

    the plot was so convoluting and there were way too many different characters that I completely lost track of what was going on before the movie was even half-way over. The movie also portrays the characters in such a way as to make you (or at least me) not feel any sympathy or empathy for any of them in the least bit.

    The strength of this movie lies with Craig's subtle, yet commanding, presence. The story twists unexpected and smooth. Easily making my Top Ten all time, which given the company it keeps, is saying something. BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!!

    ...and it was still in voiceover exposition mode. Do these guys understand that film is a visual medium? If one needs five minutes of voiceover exposition so as to explain the premise of a story, one does not understand how to use film to tell story.
