Description

This emotionally-charged film celebrates the triumph of a young rural couple as they face nature's greatest ravages, the threat of poverty and a wrenching separation. Sissy Spacek, Mel Gibson and Scott Glenn star in this moving tribute to love, faith, determination and the vanishing America of the independent farm family. Tom and Mae Garvey (Gibson and Spacek) are struggling to keep their homestead safe from the local power authority who wants to flood their land. When Mae's former beau, John Wade (Glenn), turns out to be in charge of the plan to acquire the property, tensions run high, climaxing in a devastating confrontation on the flooded river banks. Directed by On Golden Pond's Mark Rydell, The River features magnificent location photography by Vilmos Zsigmond and an outstanding score by John Williams.

This movie hold a special place in my heart because it was filmed in my home town of Church HIll, Tennessee and it came out the very year I was born! From the elementary school Sissy Spacek and Scott Glen drive by and where the softball game takes place to the back roads I still travel to this day and the location of the house and the river is now Laurel Run Park however the house was destroyed years ago. This is a good movie that shows all the osbtacles that face good farmers. Aside from having a liking for it simply becasue it was filmed in my stomping grounds I believe it's truly an underrated movie and if you want a good movie without the typical warring henchmen and pure evil doers then give this one a try I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I saw this movie completely by accident and I was so impressed. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's about a small time farmer desperately trying to hang on to a family farm as everything seems to go wrong as the weather, the land and even his neighbors turn against him, yet he stands fast to his beliefs when it would be easier to just sell out to a corporate buy out. It's a story of a man who loves his family that values the land and tradition more than money, and how just tough an American country family can be. It's an unexpected and overlooked 5 star movie.
