Description

Dr. Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) is on the verge of realizing a major breakthrough in synthetic skin when a gang, led by the sadistic Robert G. Durant (Larry Drake), obliterates his laboratory. Burned beyond recognition and altered by an experimental medical procedure, Westlake attempts to rebuild his laboratory and reestablish ties with his former girlfriend Julie (Frances McDormand). But his most challenging task lies within himself. Torn between his desire to create a new life with Julie and his quest for revenge, the man known as Darkman begins to assume alternate identities in this stunning, fast-paced action thriller from director Sam Raimi.

Dark man is an underrated film in my opinion I think it should be a lot more popular than it is sadly Liam Nissan isn’t in the sequels

What is most notable is how poor Liam Neesons acting is -- he's come a long way since this film

Bad acting, bad directing, bad special effects, bad cinematography. Even for the date of this movie's original release it is no better than I could do with a $300 Panasonic video cam and about five weeks with iMovie. Seriously.

Sam Raimi attempted to get the rights to The Shadow a few years back (he's succeeded at last, and we should be seeing this movie soon). In the meantime, Raimi came up the concept of Darkman, a dark combination of The Shadow, Doctor Frankenstein Count of Monte Cristo and The Phantom of the Opera. Those who disparage this movie for it's bleak tone entirely miss the point- this is old school retribution with an undertaker's smile. Liam Neeson defines the role of a man who is hideously disfigured and feels no pain, slowly losing his humanity in a world that he has no part in. The humor is pitch black and everyone plays it up with such relish that it's impossible to take it seriously. And really, that's the point- so hit play, sit back and enjoy some old pulp with a new face.

I was surprised at how poorly made this movie was. Much of the acting and the action was campy and weak. I expected it to be much more intelligent and to have more of an allegorical connection rather than just another summer action movie that has fared poorly over the years. Maybe I am judging too harshly because of the recent releases of quite a few quality comic/graphic novel adaptations such as Watchmen et al.

Darkman is an interesting movie. Lets put this movie into context. In 1990, there were hardly any decent superhero movies in existance. It wasn't like today where there are dozens to choose from, ranging from horrible to fantastic. Aside from Batman there was hardly a decent superhero on the silver screen. So in comes Darkman a superhero movie done well with a dark streak. Also take into account that this is Sam Raimi in his early days. This is before Spiderman. This is Sam, just enjoying the art of making movies. Is the movie great? No. Is it fun to watch? At times. Is it worth watching? Definately. Watch Liam Neeson before he was a jedi or a retired secret agent badass trying to get his daughter back. Violence in all its cartoonish glory and a cameo by the great Bruce Campbell in it's closing moments. Darkman has enough magic to make the first watch fun and maybe even the second or the third . . . . .

Nothing earth shattering here. Production was a little too much in-your-face comic book style and I think the film could have lived without it and maybe been better -- because I understood very clearly from the segment at the hospital. Look at me! I am a film critic. I don't regret watching it let me put it that way Fino!
  • A classic raimi film

A very good film with the right amount of camp and action directed by raimi and a score by Danny Elfman. What more could you ask for?
