Description

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat is one of the great paintings of the world, and in "Sunday in the Park with George," book writer James Lapine and composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim bring a story based on the work brilliantly to life. While the painting depicts people gathered on an island in the Seine, the musical goes beyond simply describing their lives. It is an exploration of art, of love, of commitment. Seurat connected dots to create images; Lapine and Sondheim use connection as the heart of all our relationships. Winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

  • lovely show - wish Apple did better transfer

I have always loved this show, and was glad back-in-the-day to have a VHS copy taken from the PBS broadcast. When I decided to purchase, I never expected that what Apple was selling would be basically a low-quality transfer from that same VHS tape, glitches and a couple fo audio drop-outs and all... what a shame; of course, the play is still brilliant and holds up, but I wished with all the advances in video processing and quality that Apple would have turned some of that on here instead of charging for a sub-quality viewing experience... that's the only reason I'm giving 3 instead of 5 stars to one of my favorite musicals.

I thought this wasn't what I was looking for (the movie STARRING Bernadette Peters) but I rented it anyway. Turns out she is in it. Nice of u to include Patinkin.

The synchronicity of the Pointillist Seurat, and the incredible attention to detail shown in every number by Patinkin deconstruct and reveal the cold hard side of art. Peters sweeps through as the beauty and humanity of art and particularly art that captures a moment in time, in history, in life.

This is a masterwork! You must experience it if you've not already. This musical is so brave in what it has to say, and yet there is room in the work for your own personal perceptions and feelings. I'm convinced that great art requires the viewer, listener, reader, etc. to complete it! THis musical means nothing until you experience it and become a part of it! Enjoy!

Bernadette Peters isn't listed in the credits here on iTunes which is odd considering she was nominated for a Best Actress Tony Award for her performance in 1984. She is most assuredly in this version, and is not to be missed.

Sondheim created another beautiful masterpiece when he composed "Sunday in the Park with George". It's a truly heart-breaking show, and it's score is stunning. This presentation is filmed well and captures the story very enchantingly. Worth every penny, but what Sondheim show isn't?
