  • Missing Scenes and Songs

This is great movie but unfortunately like many of the versions of Brigadoon out there, it is lacking several scenes and songs. I remember seeing and hearing these scenes so I know they exist but they are missing from this less expensive release (the wedding vows, the songs "Come to me, Bend to me" and "There But for You Go I"). See this show on stage at some point to get the full effect of the beautiful music and story. Or buy the (gulp!) Laserdisc to get the entire show. At any rate, there is no better dancer than Gene Kelly and those who criticize the dancing should know that most of today's choreographer acknowledge their debt to Gene Kelly and his innovative moves.
  • One of the weaker Gene Kelly Musicals

This film is takes itself too seriously. Most of its attempts at comic relief come in the form of drunken behavior by Van Johnson. The songs are forgettable, the dancing is minimal, and the dialog is horrible.

I love this move! Be warned the songs are cheesy and the acting is laughable but it has a wonderful story line!! The songs will grow on you and then you wont be able to stop singing them!! If you ever get a chance go to Scotland and when you see the "heather on the hills", think of this movie and belt out the lyrics! I did!! Watch this movie!! Rent it if you have to, its a classic that will stay in your heart and mind forever!!
  • Wonderfully Romantic in everyway!

Minnelli wanted to do this movie years earlier, but he couldn't. By the time he could it, they could only shoot it on a soundstage, but what a soundstage. Great colors, sets, and cinematography. Of course, it's the music and dance that really distinguish the film. All in all, this is a beautifully uplifting romantic musical starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse: because there's a real chemistry between them. Brigadoon enthralls with such numbers as "Waitin' for My Dearie," "Bonnie Jean," and of course the spectacularly beautiful "Heather on a Hill." See if you don't hit the replay button a few times when these numbers end!

one of the last great hollywood musicals. when you think of it historically, it's sort of a downer--gene kelly was in his forties, his famous crow's feet uncomfortably visable, his voice a little less youthful--but nevertheless, it gets your spirit up. with its crazily artsy set design and the old fashioned timeless tale of two people falling in love, its bound to get your spirits soaring. as the music goes, most of it's traditional celtic stuff, of course there has to be one hollywood number, and gene kelly does brilliantly with "almost like being in love." in short, at least rent it. it'll brighten your day, and get you yearning for more movies made like this one.
