Description

Europe, 1916. A living legend (aged 24) performing amazing dogfights and aerial stunts, flies in on painted wings to become famous the world over. For millions of his countrymen, he becomes an idol, a symbol of hope and pride. Baron Manfred von Richthofen (MATTHIAS SCHWEIGHÖFER) is the crack pilot of the German aerial combat forces during World War I - a legend in his own time, a hero at home and a man both feared and respected by the enemy, including Allied Forces’ Canadian pilot, Captain Roy Brown (JOSEPH FIENNES). He and his fellow officers, Lieutenants Voss (TIL SCHWEIGER), Sternberg (MAXIM MEHMET) and Lehmann (HANNO KOFFLER) see their duels in the sky as tactical, almost sportsmanlike, clever challenges that, at least at first, obscure their view of the horrors of the World War I battlefields below. And the provocative red paint job of his Fokker aircraft earns him the nickname ‘The Red Baron’. Unwittingly, he allows the German high command to manipulate his chivalrous code of honor and misuse him for propaganda purposes – until the young pilot falls in love with Käte (LENA HEADEY), a beautiful and resolute nurse who opens his eyes to the tragic fact that there is more to war than dogfights won and adversaries downed. Baron von Richthofen finally becomes aware of his role in the propaganda machine of a senseless and barbarous war. With a torn heart, despite the heavy losses in his squadron and his disgust for the war and his responsibility to his fighter wing, von Richthofen cannot help but fly. But even for this living legend, each new combat mission could be his last…

  • Enjoyable Movie

I enjoyed this movie despite its historical variances. Yes, there are historical inaccuracies in the movie, and yes, the film takes a bit too much license from time to time. However, it is an enjoyable piece worthy of watching at least once. It does acquit itself well in expressing the problems of the war to the pilots on the German side of WW1. The allied actors were rather two dimensional, as well as some of the German General Staff, but this did not detract from a movie that sits in the historical fiction realm.
  • Realistic air combat

Probably the most realistic portrayals of air combat, airplane behaviors and life within a squadron. Special effects are excellent, not over the top (pardon the pun). Great score, great acting. Romance not over done.

Despite the fact that this was a very historically inaccurate movie, I loved it! Matthias Schweighofer was brilliant along with Joseph Fiennes. I have always known who the Red Baron was since I was little and asked my parents why Snoopy was always shooting him down. I recently did a report about Manfred in school and learned his life's story. It's bad enough that people around the world don't know him, but half the people in Germany don't even know who he was! All in all, this was a fantastic movie, 5 stars for me!
  • Seriously, I dont think so.

Terrible script. You will learn much more about the man himself. (Red Baron). If you watch the History Channels special on it. This movie does him no justice. Sad. No matter which side he was on. He was a great man!.

How do you have this remarkable story to work with, so MUCH potential to make a truly outstanding movie.......and film this instead? Awful.
  • I share the trailer for this film with my high school history students.

I really enjoyed the movie and it's soundtrack. I like to whet my students' appetite for history by introducing them to historical figures who weren't much older then they are now, when they made their mark on history.

the only accurate part about this movie was the planes were technically correct, outside of that, the movie is almost a complete fabrication.

A line from the movie when asked about patriotism. There are many quotes if one takes time to research Von Richtoven. It took great care to tell such a heartfelt and exquisite portrayal of the period. You ask about the lives of those who give so much. This tabloid leads you through the intracacies and foibles of the human condition as seen through the eyes of one man.
