Description

In this blackest of comedies, a perfect 18-year marriage suddenly becomes unglued and the gleefully evil Barbara (Kathleen Turner) and Oliver (Michael Douglas) Rose single-mindedly inflict as much misery as possible on each other. Rather than just get divorced, they declare war, fighting to the bitter end over their huge mansion and every possession in it. Not even the calculating guidance of Oliver's lawyer (Danny DeVito) can stop this uncompromisingly nasty two some as their vicious battle sends them on an increasingly dark and dangerous path.

My favorite dark comedy of all time. An expensive divorce attorney has a tragic tale to tell. He informs a wannabe client that there will be no charge. "I get paid $450 an hour to talk to people," he says, "and so when I offer to tell you something for free, I advise you to listen carefully." He tells the story of a couple of clients of his, the Roses, who were once happy, & then got involved in a angry, unrelenting, war of the sexes, in a bitter divorce battle, & were never happy again...

This movie is about meanness and nothing else. It is not funny or entertaining.

Brutally honest, yet totally over the top. Smart and sophisticated in places, crude and sophomoric in others. Turner and Douglas at their very best. Even though this movie is close to 25 years old, it hasn't aged at all. Far more intelligent than just about every comedy being made today.
