Description

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, a breathtaking new documentary from the incomparable Werner Herzog (ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, GRIZZLY MAN) follows an exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. A hit at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS is an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of pristine artwork dating back to human hands over 30,000 years ago -- almost twice as old as any previous discovery.

...about this cave. The findings look amazing, but they get lost in this documentary.

Terrible documentary. Yes, the findings are fascinating. But the music was eerie and unpleasant. The narrator was off with his commentary vs. what was displayed on the screen. There was very little of a history lesson here. How about comparing these findings to other findings around the globe? Duh? Are you to assume that all viewers know how remarkable 30,000 years really is. Compared to what??? Terrible documentary. Don't wast for time!
  • French art film with Chauvet Cave as a prop

OK, call me shallow. But I'm not going to rate a documentary high just because Warner Herzog is considered a documentary giant. I am not sure why this thing averages a rating of 4 stars. I found it very annoying. Too much time spent looking at shots of people's faces, too much playing with light over the cave paintings, too much melodrama, not enough information. I felt like I did not learn much at all about what life would have been like for those that did those paintings, why they made the paintings, or how they were used or their purpose. And the "postscript." What was that?! Comparing us to albino crocodiles looking at each other? The Chauvet Cave is such a significant site. I think it deserves better than someone using it as a prop to attempt to make a documentary in the style of a French art film.

Werner Herzog gets the only window of opputunity to film the 30.000 year old cave art. If your a creative type, count yourself lucky to see a film like this.

Its like watching one of those jazz docos in which little music is actually heard. Where are the paintings? YOu see very little of them. Music is inappropriate and obtrusive and very annoying. YOu do get to watch Herzog's team looking at the art in profile so you can't see it, but you can enjoy watching them enjoy it. Don't bother. and the narration - is Herzog taking the p?

I heard Werner Herzog being interviewed on the radio about his new documentary. I searched on iTunes and there it was. Thank you iTunes! It is definitely a documentary so don't expect any big dramatic scenes or special affects. The photography is beautiful. The story is incredible. According to Herzog, what it took to photograph the walls was a feat in itself. The government of France only allowed them to be inside the cave for very limited times, the lighting had to be special, as well as the equipment. Plus, they had to stay on the special metal ramps while walking through the cave. There was a lot of the cave that could not be shown because the government did not allow them to walk in those areas. I would definitely recommend this to anybody with an interest in human history, which should be every human being.
  • Excellent experience- Incredible soundtrack

Observing these ancient cave paintings up close & in dim lighting, accompanied by the ethereal soundtrack truly is like touching upon some deep rooted forgotten dream. The people that awoke every day, survived, lived, loved, and created these astounding messages for posterity were people like you & I - 32,000 years ago. It is comforting in a bittersweet way; this film calmly evokes the sense of the fleeting nature of human life, but also its perserverence & how truly special it is. It gives me hope that some how, & in some form, there will be people like you & I in a distant future. I immediately sought out & purchased the soundtrack.

Really makes the vastness of time between us and our ancestors tangible and emotional. Watch it just to get that tiny taste of another world.
