In my opinion, the best movie of 2011! As a matter fact, my brother auditioned and was so close to getting one of the lead rolls!

  • Slowest Movie EVER

This has to be the slowest movie in the history of movies. I don't mean, slow like 66% character building. I mean slow like you could fall asleep at any point and still understand the last 30 minutes where the ONLY action takes place.

So I must say I loved this movie but it's for a certain type of person. Let me explain. This movie is set in the summer of 1979 in a small midwestern town called Lilian in Ohio. This is great because it's something it not marked on anyone's map. It is only 12000 people and is in the middle of nowhere in a way. This helps because the alien can operate at will and isn't restricted because of too many witnesses. Also this movie brings up the whole US government has aliens type of plot but paints humans as the bad guys. We are holding this alien captive and he escapes out of a train after it crashed and begins to rebuild his ship underneath the town. It is also nocturnal so the monster is shrouded in darkness or not seen at all until the end of the movie. It strikes at will but only at the right creating suspense. This movie is almost like a murder mystery but on a larger scale. This movie is very suspenseful and leaves the viewer to figure it out which is nice. All in all I loved the movie but like I said it's for a certain type of person and isn't in your face action but a suspenseful flick that captivates you until the end.
  • Confused, unfocused mess

While it is a well shot film with terrific performances from it's young stars, Super 8 is a confused mess. It can't decide if the alien should provoke fear or awe or pity. It feels very much as if the screenplay was made up as they went along. It also goes far beyond an homage to earlier sci fi, and is really more an imitation of better films' scenes. The difference being that those movies used those moments to serve a story or a larger picture, here they feel like they exist solely to mimic someone else's work. Disappointing.
