Description

Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long lost son returns home in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave – the birthplace of his first life… Winner of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, UNCLE BOONMEE is a fantastical tale of life as it ends and begins again.

Came to the movie with high expectations given the critical acclaim showered on this as well as previous works by this director. Sadly, this film is typical art house fare of the mediocre variety. Pointless long takes, self-consciously minimal dialogue tries to lend it artistic gravitas but ends up being merely predictably mannered. The whole Thai myth/ghost story element operates on a level that would appeal only to the most culturally blinkered segment of the western film audience. It lends little in terms of dramatic interest. As a lover of foreign films and auteur-centered cinema, I really wanted to give this film a chance. But alas, even for this fan of Ozu, this film simply dragged on beyond the limits of patience, offering nothing in the way of intellectual or visual reward.

A movie that questions of life. About life. Spirituality and identity in time to breath. The reincarnation on this planet. That these beliefs will have to find their own causes. Film filled with humor, telling the time. If the conversation is powerful. Rich philosophical thought. Supernatural. Getting closer to death. Dive into the depths of the mind, everything is based on the life cycle.
