It features some classic themes, notably that of life and the pursuit to hold on to it The pacing is something like the steps to a waltz- fast into the next, but lingering each time. There’s an abundance of closeups and mugging, but there’s plenty of decent acting going on in this flick About the best thing about it is what is communicated without words as much as what is. The SFX are none too fancy and work pretty well with how they’re handled. Nothing amazing, though, I assure you. If you’re expecting the trademark “horror” schlock of recent generations, kindly leave this film alone. The emphasis is more on the loss of humanity in good people and the equally gruesome lack of it in others than over-the-top butchery. If you liked Hammer Dracula, you’ll like this. If you liked the Fly, you’ll appreciate the homage. If you liked Freddy vs Jason...I’m not in a position to help you with that. Overall, a good film from a prolific filmmaker, and a lot more nuanced than what he’s known for. Most people would give this a solid 3 out of 5, but I’m a sucker for understated drama. 4 needle pokes out of 5

I just see the lead character as being beset by some wicked bad luck, like in an episode of The Twilight Zone. Rent this one as cheaply as you can.

Okay, I really wanted to like this movie as I love horror movies and the trailer really hooked me. However, that was the only scary scene. To me, the rest of the movie just muddled along and it seemed anti-climactic.

This was a nice, genre-bending and refreshing surprise. I'm not a fan of Federico Luppi but his acting in all Del Toro's movies is impeccable. This one, in my opinion, is his deepest and darkest intervention. Everything in this movie is depicted with style and a warmth that belongs to true science fiction.

I'm inclined to give this 2 1/2 stars. Not going to lie... it's a vampire film. So, naturally, it starts off low. Despite what the other reviewers say, the redeeming aspect of this film was the directing. Del Toro is the best in the business, and he doesn't disappoint here. Too bad everything else does...

I cannot believe I waded through the entire film. I'm such a cinephile, I can find treasure in anyone's garbage. Not this time. I wanted to cry for having lost not only time, but a little self-respect in having watched this abortion of cinema. A refund should be demanded.

the saving grace was that the kid in the movie didn't say anything. I mean anything. That kept her from bringing it lower. This movie was in the 'horror' category. Nothing scary. No real action. Better suited for drama category, ie bunch of people talking, probably a plot somewhere if it was entertaining enough to stay awake. I checked my watch several times. occasionally counted my pulse to pass the time.

Interesting plot, not very flashy by today's standards. Don't expect great special effects. Overall worth watching.
