Description

Kurt Russell (Stargate) stars in a high-velocity sci-fi action-thriller from director John Carpenter (co-written by Nick Castle) that sets the screen ablaze with heart-stopping suspense, outrageous stunts and imaginative special effects. Bristling with riveting chases and hard-hitting fight sequences, Escape From New York is your passport to nonstop excitement! In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a prison which houses the world's most brutal inmates. And when the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence) crash lands inside, only one man can bring him back: Snake Plissken (Russell), a notorious outlaw and former Special Forces war hero who, in exchange for a full pardon, descends into the decayed city and wages a blistering war against the captors. But time is short: in 24 hours, an explosive charge planted inside Snake's body will end the mission and his life unless he succeeds!

  • A Real “Killer” B Movie (one of 237!)

This review is an excerpt from my book “Killer B’s: The 237 Best Movies On Video You’ve (Probably) Never Seen,” which is available as an ebook on iBooks. If you enjoy this review, there are 236 more like it in the book (plus a whole lot more). Check it out! Escape From New York: Was it eerily prescient to posit an attack on Manhattan 20 years before 9/11? Or is it just a weird coincidence? Either way, if you can just suspend your disbelief long enough to swallow the impossible premise, it’s easy to enjoy this high camp parody of post-apocalypse action flicks like “The Road Warrior” and “Blade Runner”—a parody produced even as these films were just becoming popular. While the action is off-beat, intriguing and beautifully directed, the real reason this movie stands out is its dark humor—and most of that revolves around its ensemble of bizarre characters: The pants-wetting President; enthusiastic cab driver Borgnine (“Wait’ll I tell the fellas who I had in my cab!”); Hayes as the self-styled Duke of New York (“I’m A-Number One!”); and Stanton, sullenly wonderful as the brains behind the ruling regime on this modern Devil’s Island. Even Russell goons it up, playing his snarling anarchist Pliskin as an imitation Clint Eastwood—much as he played his character in Carpenter’s action comedy “Big Trouble In Little China” as a parody of John Wayne.

Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken is THE anti hero that helped define a generation of characters in cinema. While elements of the film speak to its age, (mostly wardrobe and props) they are merely details that can't detract from solid script writing, great characters and action that keeps the viewer engaged and rooting for the best bad guy in the film. This is a must own for any Carpenter fan, any post apocalyptic film fan, any anti hero fan, any action movie fan. One of the three films that had a significant influence on my life. If you've never seen it, rent it. If you're already a Plissken fan, demand that Apple sell this film.

This is easily my favorite action filck ever. I probably watch this movie once every other month. It's a shame that Apple is missing out on the $ from sales. I would buy Escape From NY for my iPad/iPhone, but I won't pay to rent something I already own on Blu-Ray.
  • Cult Classic!

There a few characters cooler than anti-hero Snake Plissken. With elements ranging from social satire, to intense horror film, to action thriller Escape From New York is the kind of movie experience they just don't make anymore. It's essentially a Western, but in place of a bounty hunter going into deadly frontier territory we have former solider turned criminal Snake Plissken seeking his objective and own salvation in an apocalyptic criminal run New York of the future. Despite it's nihilist hero and dystopian view of the future it's so much fun that Escape From New York invites repeated viewings. THIS IS ONE WE WANT TO BUY ITUNES SO GET ON THE BALL!!
