Description

An action-packed, award-winning film exploring human struggles, hope and personal courage in the face of overwhelming odds. From executive producer Denis Leary ("The Amazing Spider-Man", TV's "Rescue Me", "The Thomas Crown Affair") this riveting and inspiring film spends a year with Detroit firefighters, who are charged with the thankless task of saving a city many have written off as dead. With vast stretches of abandoned buildings, the highest arson rate in the country, and a budget crisis of epic proportions, these brave men and women risk injury, disablement, and death to try and make a difference for the city they call home. The firefighters’ worst fears are realized when a charismatic young fireman is devastatingly injured on the job. The brotherhood is tested when the city turns to new a new fire commissioner to shake up the system with hard-line decisions and drastic, often controversial measures. Closer than you've ever been, BURN takes you into the fires and into the lives of those who fight them in the most overworked and worst-funded fire department in the United States.

Don't get me wrong, firefighters are heroes as far as I'm concerned. But whomever wrote the film's description, specifically describing it as a "Thankless job" is way off. As a police officer, I watched people fawn all over the firefighters we worked with, everyone loved them! They were the "good guys" and as cops we were the "bad guys." People brought them gifts and food and I never heard anybody talk about firefighters as terrible people. They do their work diligently and this film is a tribute to firefighters everywhere.

It’s a well made doc and gives you a glimpse of what’s in the future of many other towns and cities in America. Firefighters truly are the unsung heros of this Country. God bless them all.

Amazingly well done documentary. What a sad day for a great American city.
  • Much respect for the firefighters, but also just as much for the filmmakers.

I had the privilege attending a Q&A with the filmmakers and if you had any idea what they went through to get this film made you’d be even more impressed (the Q&A was on "the pitfalls of crowd funding and how to avoid them" before anyone thinks they were complaining about their hardships). From knocking on doors to get funding and equipment to an very time consuming, and sleep depriving Kickstarter, to taking the finished film all over the country and renting theaters because they promised people & other firefighters they would get the chance to see it the filmmakers never gave up. Their determination and willingness to put themselves in the line of fire not only metaphorically but literally, to get the shots they did, because they believed in the story they were telling is as inspiring as the story itself. Even more lovely is when you try to tell them that they refuse to believe that what they did and what they went through is even 1/10th of what the guys they filmed do on a daily. They really are a rare breed, and deserve any success that comes their way.

Truly amazing to see this. It's great to have something out there that can educate people on what we as firefighters deal with.

This movie is an outstanding display of uncut and undirected work of what a true firefighter does. The firefighters of Detroit are faced with an unimaginable amount of fires right now and not the best equipment or upper staff to back them up. If you really want to see what most of your hometown fire departments do, get this movie! Plus you'll be benefiting a great organization when you buy it.
