“You hear about war, famine, atrocities, corruption, but all of this is affecting individual people, and they’re reacting the same way anyone would react. I’m trying to make a connection between readers here who know nothing about Africa and individual Africans. These are people with feelings, fears, hopes, and dreams, who experience joys as much as they also experience tragedy and disappointment. They are not just statistics.”

The message Ingot from this story is never give up the fight for freedom. The main character did not exchange his quest for freedom to became a victim. Through perseverance and grit he got the freedom he sought despite the odds, despite his circumstances. When the dream is big enough the facts don’t count. The fact that he was a slave had no bearing on his dream to be free.

The brutally slow pace of this movie brought the torture of Northup to life. I shared his pain as this movie dragged on and on, grinding on my very last nerve. If the point of this movie was to provide the viewer with sympathetic pain, they succeeded.

12 Years A Slave is gorgeous not because of it's brilliant direction by Steve McQueen it's because of it's hard-hitting top-notch performences by the lead actors. This movie tells the story of the greatest tradgeys in the history of mankind and it tells it deeply and slow i enjoyed this movie more than any other movie this year.

Truly amazing how they were able to transmit the suffering of a man during the slavery time. Any one who reviews this movie of a anything else than an award winning film is insane. An extraordinary masterpiece!

One of the best movies I have ever seen. It is about the most horrific things that humanity has done, but at the same time it is a movie about hope. The acting is amazing. It's a must.

I really feel that this movie is incredible. The shots, the angles, and the acting. Other people in the reviews are writing about it being boring and turning it off and how it’s just nominated for best picture because if its topic/ subject. Although, they are entitled to that opinion, I personally believe it is told perfectly and the lighting and sound is amazing. The camera angle where outstanding and the plot was great. The movie did feel a little slow, but it was overall something I am great full for viewing. Definitely one of my favorite movies.

This was a great movie. I wish I could say I'm surprised by the negative reviews that say slavery is an unimportant topic and that we should stop talking about it, but I'm not. I’m also very incredulous that people have the nerve to say stuff like the portrayal of slavery in this movie was “embellished.” You know because you were there or what?
