Description

In this elegantly unsettling murder mystery, Stellan Skarsgård plays an enigmatic Swedish detective with a checkered past who arrives in a small town in northern Norway to investigate the death of a teenage girl. As he digs deeper into the facts surrounding the heinous killing, his own demons and the tyrannical midnight sun begin to take a toll. The success of Erik Skjoldbjærg’s chilling procedural anticipated the international hunger for Scandinavian noirs and serial- killer fictions, and the film features one of Skarsgård’s greatest performances.

Very tense, taut and tight production. Not the cheapened Christopher Nolan-Pacino-Williams derivative based on this. When I first saw that, I thought it could have been a great film done right. This is a very good film, fresh and compelling. You can see the talent of the director and actor, both young when this was produced, and understand they would do good things. Sadly, America has ruined Stellan over the years. But sample this. You'll be impressed.

This is the third irritation of this movie I have see. This one interesting…subtle….viewer gets entrenched in the stupor of insomnia. Used almost as a character in the movie. Cannot remember too much if the first version…Pachino and Robin Williams version was more of “New York Cop muser mystery….. likes this more……intense..
