Description

An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course.

Regardless of how nostalgic you are and how you feel about movie remakes, this is good and entertaining. It’s an easy 3-4 stars.
  • iTunes Extras & Apple TV Extras needed

Good movie, but why are the Special Features and iTunes & Apple TV Extras not on iTunes and Apple TV? Why does the original film have the iTunes Extras but the remake doesn’t have any iTunes Extras? I don’t understand why there’s no iTunes Extras if there are Special Features on home video. I have discovered that the Special Features for this film is on the DVD/Blu-Ray release, but not included on iTunes. This is really annoying to me when the Special Features appear on the Home Video releases of movies, but not on iTunes as iTunes & Apple TV Extras because technology is advancing everyday. Apple and iTunes should make it mandatory for all movies that came with Special Features on home video be released on iTunes as Apple TV & iTunes Extras as well. Can you guys please add iTunes & Apple TV Extras for this movie such as the audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes features along with the recut version and also upgrade to 4K so people can see behind the scenes of how movies are made? I think adding iTunes & Apple TV Extras for this movie can be an improvement for the movie since the home video release includes Special Features as with all other movies.

As a kid, this movie was extremely scary for me- the tripods are the symbol of death itself, and our invaders are frightening to look at. Unfortunately, not many movies with those first impressions appear years later. However, this movie still scares me even after it’s long release in the theaters from 2005. It’s the best film adaptation so far for War of The Worlds. From its cinematography, soundtrack, visuals in which they still hold up presently,to its amazing cast. [huge cast by the way, the crowds did amazing.] All the hate it got wasn’t exactly fair criticism, most went on the wagon because of the children being annoyingly stupid. News flash of course, they’re supposed to be. Robbie is rebellious, and Rachel is a brat who’s scared out of her mind. Both characters are meant to be annoying and difficult because the father has no control over them at all. Robbie somehow surviving his encounter with the tripods isn’t explained, however I’ve grown to believe he got lucky and slipped away- the invaders weren’t focused on him at all because there was a huge crowd of people running in front of them. Perhaps a unit from the military aided him as well. As for the fair part of criticism; lack of explanation for the invaders origins and overall planning, and the lack of military perspective. Remember.. they wanted to make this film from a civilian perspective, not one where humanity get all the questions answered right away like most films do. I believe it would’ve been nicer to have depth of the family issues between Ray and his children though, because the third act didn’t exactly give us any big development besides him becoming the father he was meant to be before any of this had happened. We know there’s issues among the family, yet no close moments were given about what happened. Yet this film wasn’t wanting to give you every details in hand, and wanted you to analyze each scene for yourself- so I suppose that’s the idea they went for. Overall, amazing film and I wish there was more to do with these aliens!

Those who are real movie fans and geeks understand the hard work that was put into this film. This movie got me through my rough childhood and had actually been there for me. I am grateful this film was made.

Good adaptation of the book and earlier film. Excellent special effects. One of the very few film roles in which Cruise is satisfactory as the "hero." The Reacher roles are difficult to believe ;-).
