Description

This mouthwateringly entertaining film travels the globe to unravel a captivating culinary mystery. General Tso's chicken is a staple of Chinese-American cooking, and a ubiquitous presence on restaurant menus across the country. But just who was General Tso? And how did his chicken become emblematic of an entire national cuisine? Director Ian Cheney (King Corn) journeys from Shanghai to New York to the American Midwest and beyond to uncover the origins of this iconic dish, turning up surprising revelations and a host of humorous characters along the way. Told with the verve of a good detective story, The Search for General Tso is as much about food as it is a tale of the American immigrant experience.

There are so many ways to handle the subject matter but I couldn't respond to this film's approach. An okay doc but disappointing, plodding and repetitive.

A great documentary film about the dish that we’ve all come to love. Animation and interviews with famous restauranteurs set the stage for the film which traces the history of Chinese culture in America from the early struggles of Chinese immigrants to the widespread success of the Chinese food industry. A fun and very interesting watch for the whole family and anybody who loves General Tso chicken.

Where DID that chicken come from? I never knew I even wondered - until the movie pulled me in with it’s unique mix of characters, fun filmmaking, and delicious food. It’s rare that I have so much fun learning so much all at the same time.

I heard Jennifer Lee's TED talk on this and she was entertainingly informative. The movie is the same.
