Description

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The story of the Essex and those involved, as narrated in Nathaniel Philbrick's incredible history, is all but twisted into cartoonish nonsense in Ron Howard's ridiculous movie. Whereas the facts behind the sinking, and the incredible tale of survival, were enough to craft an incredible film, Howard has chosen to misrepresent characters and their roles, distort facts, and overuse CGI to create little more than a Hollywood superhero/monster movie akin to King Kong. In reading Philbrick's history, there was such potential for a gripping drama portraying the true terror and heroism of the individuals involved. Instead, this film ascribes events to the wrong individuals involved, twists historical moral dilemmas into pointless dramatic scenes, and senselessly makes it appear that the whale (which in reality attacked the Essex twice) followed the lifeboats for over 1,000 miles at which time Owen Chase made the politically correct decision to come to terms with his immorality of killing the world's wildlife and "save the whales." So much potential.... Wasted.
  • Great character portrayal based on the setting

It was a good movie, but the ending held no depth and the background of the characters was not entirely revealed. The main actors though, did a very good portrayal of how one would be if stranded in the ocean. Plus, I watched it mainly for Tom Holland!!!😍

I was in the mood to watch a good movie something I'd hadn't seen before and came upon this. It was an excellent movie. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it before. I rented it but I think I'll buy it so I can watch with family

  • Horrible Acting

This movie had so much potential, but they ruined it by picking a horrible actor to play the main character. His accent is dreadful -- it's constantly changing from him trying to sound old-New Englander to his natural modern day voice. The result is that you can't stay engaged. You keep coming out of the movie.
