I expected a high octane exciting storyline and all I got were background characters and a turn to the dark side

Honestly I watched the anime series first before realizing that season 3 is taking way too long so I ended up reading the manga. I must say, I love them both. The way they do it is almost like FMA and FMA Brotherhood in the sense of FMA is its own story while Brotherhood follows the manga. Though Root A isn't too far off from the manga, it's definitely creative and expands deeper into the Ghoul world. You'd be a fool if you didn't take your time to watch this.
