Description

In 1986 Garry Shandling was poised to become a permanent guest host on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. Instead, he took a chance on an offer from fledgling cable network Showtime to create his own television series. No questions asked. A surreal look at the daily life of a young single man who is a comedian, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show was not a typical sitcom. Experimenting with the sitcom form meant inviting the audience onto the set, playing with the passage of time, and generally exploding the genre and making art of the debris.

Reviews

  • Still innovative and fresh

I enjoyed all the shows. Funny, innovative stuff, but my favorite is definitely the last show of the season. Gary had Red Buttons take over the last half of the show and Red was hot. It was a wonderful tribute to the man and that form of humor that relies on staccato delivery. A genuine pleasure.
  • IGSS is phenomenal and worth viewing over and over and over.....

I purchased the complete box set and I have now watched all the episodes twice--I highly recommend the complete series. IGSS was just as funny to me the second time through (and maybe even funnier) as I was now paying attention to the actor's methods, timing, and the incredible spontaneity of Garry as shown in the outtakes and the whole thing just works! Though not a traditional sitcom (thank goodness), the likeableness of the cast draws the viewer in and they all seemed so familiar to me, like old friends. I only wish there had been more seasons...... The commentaries and the interviews with the writers was especially enjoyable and I feel like I have been educated on the comic genius and interconnections of some of the great comedy writers of the last thirty years. Well done, well done!
