I saw the preview for this and was very interested. The show did not disappoint me. Quality programming with engaging characters from the love fraught Jenny to the Nun with dementia and everyone in between. Once again amongst the absolute junk found on regular networks and cable, PBS stands out. I would also recommend Mr. Selfridge and the new Sherlock Holmes.

Some of the best works on the screen today, a return to our past, the beginings. what can possibly surpass the birth of a child? On the other hand, having studied under nuns and their use of a measuring stick still haunts me, but has made me a better person today. Miranda Hart makes this series work and I was jealous of that bobby kissing her.
  • Love the show...except for problem with episode 5...

This show is wonderful, loved it. The problem I had is although it downloaded just fine to my computer, episode 5 would not copy to my ipod. I got the message that itunes could not copy it because the file could not be read or written. All the other episodes copied over. Why not episode 5? I can watch it on my computer. Talked with itunes support this morning and was told that for them to investigate this, I would have to pay. Why?? The problem is with the episode not being copied, not my computer or ipod. All the other episodes copied just fine. And I have never had this type of problem before. I am not a happy itunes customer.

I like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and all the usual suspects. But of all the things I saw this year, no other show left me feeling so elevated in spirit. What a remarkable life the protagonist led. When you are having your moments of doubt, here's a reminder that there is good in the world.

This is one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. The stories and characters are so rich. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will love the characters. Great show!

I watched the free first episode, and the free Christmas episode. I am a nurse, and work in Psychiatry and loved the blend of medical with social issues. But, someone here posted in the comments that if you download the free PBS app, you can watch the first 5 episodes for free. That must have expired, because I couldn't find them. Can anyone help?
  • Episode 1 is NOT free...

... in spite of the "Free Episode" announcement, I just got charged for the supposedly free episode. It's not even done downloading. I would cancel it, if it was an option, and if I would get my money back, since it's supposed to be FREE. iTunes staff, please fix this, I am curious about the show and would like to see the "free" episode", but, frankly I'd like my money back since I wasn't aware I'd be spending it on this right now.

I am in ex-pat living in London, I love everything there is about london but was dubious about this show. I have read the book this series is based on so was slightly worried they might steer more towards the shock value and embellish from Jennifer Worths books (there are more than one and they are all lovely). No such thing. It is wonderful. Sometimes gut wrenching and heart breaking, but so was that time. An eye-opener and an incredibly heart warning account of post WWII years in the East End, both families and the nurses, nuns and midwives are represented fantastically. It well and truly does the book justice. I do recommend reading the book too as there is so much more to learn about these people and the history! The Christmas special just aired here and I was 100% impressed and moved! WATCH IT!
