Description

Rated one of the “100 Best TV Shows of All Time” by Time magazine, this epic BBC series spans the history of the Roman Empire from Augustus through Claudius, a stuttering scholar who learns early to play the fool and stay alive. Based on the novels by Robert Graves, it stars Derek Jacobi (The King’s Speech, Cadfael) in a career-defining role. Siân Phillips (The Age of Innocence) is “exquisitely wicked” (Los Angeles Times) as the lethal Livia, wife to Augustus (Brian Blessed, Hamlet), while John Hurt (The Elephant Man) is “decadence personified” (USA Today) as the depraved Caligula, whose reign of terror paves the way for Claudius’s ascension.

I'm really impressed with this show! The acting from the entire ensemble is top notch and brilliant (Derek Jacobi, Patrick Stewart, and John Hurt just to name a few) and the set looks lovely, you really feel like you're in the middle of early Imperial Rome for an hour per episode. There are some overly melodramatic moments here and there, but they don't take away anything from the show and you can easily get past them since everything about this show is so addicting to watch. I love it.

I was happy to see "I,Claudius" had been added to iTunes. I enjoyed the series when it first aired and have been looking forward to the opportunity to see it again. The quality of the video is fine, considering how long ago it was shot. The audio surprised me. There are several instances when an actor's voice becomes harder to hear clearly if they face away from the camera or walk behind a prop. It's not a critical flaw, but still a little annoying. The reason that I gave only 4 stars was the omission of the episode introductions by Alistair Cooke. His segments helped to explain what was happening in Rome at the time of these four Caesars and gave context to the episodes. I don't know why they have been stripped out now, but the series is still well worth the low price being charged here.

I've been waiting for iTunes to carry I, Claudius, forever. However, for now, I'm only purchasing the first episode of Season 1. Once I determine the quality is good, I'll buy the rest of Season 1. Unless, of course, it's been remastered, which iTunes doesn't say.
