Description

Academy Award® nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing Suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow Suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women's civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Inspired by true events, Suffragette is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women's right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. The film also stars Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, and Natalie Press. Suffragette is directed by BAFTA Award winner Sarah Gavron from an original screenplay by Abi Morgan.

This movie shared more than the fight for women's suffrage but showed the humanity of the women to whom we should all look up. I'm only sad that Meryl was not in this movie more than one scene - she is a first-rate actress and for many women a symbol of strength and beauty in all ages.
  • Terrible. Wants to be meaningful, but isn't.

Just another chance for Meryl to feel like she has a cause. Focus on movies, not politics, your craft is based on an ability to act, not because you're insightful politically by nature.
  • Very Intersting but... .

If you were expecting a good Meryl Streep movie then you will be greatly disappointed. Misleading and boring.
  • Poor Camera Work

Great acting, style concept but the cinematography camera work was SO bad it made us sea/carsick. When will camera crew STOP doing hand-held camera shots that shake so badly that it makes you ill. Oh, love Abi Morgan - River (TV) show is soo good and well shot as well.

This was a great movie that showcased those who suffered and worked so hard to get the rights movement started for women.

In the last election I went down to my local school house to vote and was asked by a teacher who had a group of teen-agers with her if they could observe my process of voting {not watching my actual vote ~ just the process}. I said yes, and after I placed my ballot in the box, I told the girls that it is very important for women to vote as we did not always have that right. The female teacher held up her hand and said, “We don’t tell them about that!” And I said, “WHAT? That’s HISTORY and a pretty RELEVANT fact of history.” She said that it didn’t matter now and that they didn’t want to “stir things up.” I told the girls to watch Iron Jawed Angels {the movie} to find out what the school wasn’t willing to reveal. I couldn’t believe it. Our daughters do not know. Let’s help them {and overselves my fellow Sisters} to be Full in our Empowerment. In our lives. It’s a Big Deal. ~ Love to the process and to you all...

I was touched by the strength, courage and passion of these women. True, we certainly have to push harder for complete equality. Looking back it is hard to believe that at one time, a woman, such as myself, had so little to call upon in order to acquire simple human rights. This movie was very well written. Acting was fantastic. And, it certainly grabbed my attention. Worth the rental/purchase.

This movie was dramatic and moving. Especially when I considered that most of the characters and situations were based on real women. I love that the movie ends on a scene that leads into a newsreel of an actual historical event that drew attention to the suffragist campaign. These women fought and suffered for women everywhere to get the right to vote. Every girl and woman should see this movie.
