Description

In the age of social media, nearly every day brings a new eruption of outrage. While people have always found something to be offended by, their ability to organize a groundswell of opposition to – and public censure of – their offender has never been more powerful. Today we’re all one clumsy joke away from public ruin. Can We Take A Joke? offers a thought-provoking and wry exploration of outrage culture through the lens of stand-up comedy, with notables like Gilbert Gottfried, Penn Jillette, Lisa Lampanelli, and Adam Carolla detailing its stifling impact on comedy and the exchange of ideas. What will the future will be like if we can’t learn how to take a joke?

You know, the first top critics' review is all that needs to be said about the necessity for this movie. Makes me wonder if he was playing Minecraft while watching, as he entirely missed the point of this film. Great interviews with comics, authors, and thinkers. If you have ever wondered about what the constriction of free speech does to a society, and why it is important, this is the film to watch. As someone in the movie said, to paraphrase, when the comedians get scared, society is in very bad shape.

This is a very thought provoking, interesting, and often very funny documentary on the state of free speech, humor, and the seemingly professional offense-mongers in America. Highly recommended.

Take 70 minutes of your life and be enlightened by this very well-done documentary about how everyone is WAY too up tight now a days. The idea of being arrested simply for saying something is very scary. The fact that we still have free speech is one area where America remains superior vs the rest of the world. Let's never lose that. because if we lose it here, there is no where else to go.

Excellent! The film takes a multi fasted look at free speech. It entertains and engages while creating a beautiful sense of optimism. A must watch!
  • Thinking freely requires the possibility of speaking freely

Everyone should see this movie. The film looks at how common it is for people to become outraged and to collectively shame others into silence. And so we destroy the possibility to speak and to think together in novel ways. A great movie that considers all of this by looking at the comedy world.

Get’s to the heart of how insane it is to shut down free speech to protect the “feelings” of this or that group. It all becomes a big power trip and this video does a great job making the point.

From funny and entertaining to sobering and frightening. Great account of how political correctness is making acceptance of censorship mainstream. Not just entertaining - but really important to watch. Consider it your patriotic duty to watch this documentary.
