Description

One of America's foremost filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff) directs a remarkable ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern in this stirring look at three women striving to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer (Dern) who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother (Williams) whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student (Stewart) who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand (radiant newcomer Lily Gladstone). As their stories intersect in subtle but powerful ways, a portrait emerges of flawed, but strong-willed individuals in the process of defining themselves.

5 minutes into it, had to turn it off. could't stand watching laura dern continually scowl and nothing which needed scowling about.

"Certain Women" is an eerily perfect title for this film. Because it's about certain women -- no one especially famous or even successful by standard measures. Rather, this is a beautifully acted ensemble piece about four women, each leading lives we might actually recognize: small, not always the most fulfilling, full of real life challenges like boredom and exhaustion and a struggle to be taken seriously. The acting is pitch perfect.

I rented this because of the rave reviews (by some), notable actors, and concept. But, 10 minutes in I knew this was not for me. Odd stories. Slow pace. Unexpectedly poor production value. This combination of "issues" made it too uninteresting to watch. Left it running in the pack ground while I read email...wasn't the least bit intrusive or distracting. That's how dull it is.

I can't believe all the great reviews on here. This had to be the most blah depressing film with A-List actors that I have ever seen! Everyone seemed suicidal. Even the picture was fuzzy and colorless. If you rent this film it will be a waste to watch it in HD. Maybe it would be worse in SD! Ugh boring!

The folks who gave this film five stars clearly didn't watch the movie. One critic said this film was a "slow burn." I'd argue it never caught fire. Rather than create a slow-paced film that comes together in the end, it rambles on for almost two hours to no avail. I'm extremely upset I wasted my time and money on this movie, and I hope my review will save other from making the same mistake.

From WENDY AND LUCY to MEEK'S CUTOFF, Reichardt is one of the true American auteurs and she outdoors herself here. Pure visual poetry.

Some of the best performances I have seen on film for quite some time - across the board, from Michelle Williams (playing out of character) to Laura Dern (always great) to an every surprising KStew and a luminous performance by discovery Lily Gladstone! Reichert has solidified her status as one of the great American voices working in cinema and what she does better than any filmmaker working today is to make movies about women. So rare today.

A wonderful film about loneliness, the quiet of rural life, and 4 women seeking refuge in their own thoughts.

This movie is a very slow burn, but it's all worth it in the end. It's a great observation of small town women and the human condition in general.
