If you’re interested in a movie that makes you realize that maybe your family drama isn’t that bad after all, a movie that is the exact opposite of a Hallmark movie, one that has you wondering how could the characters have it any worse, this is it. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I watched it once and that was enough 🙈
  • Breath-takingly honest with unbelievable performances

In some ways, I'd call this southern gothic. Think of it as Steel Magnolias with all the sass and filters stripped away. The honesty of the performances (Julia Roberts blew my mind...and Meryl Streep giving a master class) struck so true. I get how people don't like it - but for me, it's one of my Top 5 movies of all time.
  • A peek into the world of personality disorders...

...and if this movie triggered you significantly, there is a reason. Personality disorders among family members are the most challenging journeys to navigate. Those of us who've lived through it, can attest to the permanent emotional damage that must be survived. Those of us who help victims survive it, understand the discipline to overcome and redefine ourselves. Those who gave this movie a negative review because it was dark and disturbing, have yet to be educated on the finer darkness of narcissistic personality disorders. Educate yourself before commenting.

We wanted to like this movie based on the cast but the storyline is dreadful. Avoid this movie!
  • This is not a comedy

The is a depressing, emotionally violent story about an mean woman and mother and her dysfunctional family. The only explanation for this being categorized as a comedy, a great comedy no less, is that iTunes is using a flawed algorithm to classify its collection of films and no human has ever proofed the output.

People walk away with polarized opinions of this film. I find it painful in more ways than one... Mostly because it is relatable on some level. This film takes things to extremes and definitely lacks a happy ending, but the acting is powerful, the story complex and the character development is phenomenal. If you are a fan of great acting, go enjoy. Just know this is not a feel good movie. It's painful. It's unhappy and its hard... But it's powerful.

This movie deserves a more positive review. Nowadays, most movies are too busy unless they are flawless like Avatar for example. Although, this movie replaces cgi with dialogue and "real" acting. It allows to understand that we are humans that go through similar life scenarios.
