Description

Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and a 2017 BAFTA for Best British Film, the latest from legendary director Ken Loach is a gripping, human tale about the impact one man can make. Gruff but goodhearted, Daniel Blake (Dave Johns) is a man out of time: a widowed woodworker who's never owned a computer, he lives according to his own common sense moral code. But after a heart attack leaves him unable to work and the state welfare system fails him, the stubbornly self-reliant Daniel must stand up and fight for his dignity, leading a one-man crusade for compassion that will transform the lives of a struggling single mother (Hayley Squires) and her two children. Graced with humor and heart, I, Daniel Blake is a moving, much-needed reminder of the power of empathy from one of the world's greatest living filmmakers.

This movie made me cry. Daniel Blake is a touching story about a proud man with a heart of gold caught in a dysfunctionally bureaucratic social welfare system. You need to see it to understand the powerful message of this movie.

Everyone in the US should see this movie. I saw this when it played in movie theaters earlier this year and was psyched to have the chance to see it again on iTunes. It's a really powerful story, for sure, and I definitely cried, but it also has a streak of humor running through it that makes it super entertaining. I can't recommend this movie enough.

Incredible direction, acting, script, Mr. Dickens would be proud,( a modern version of his type of work I think), though a bit too Bleak, Blake is a work of art. The humanity that pokes out now and again is ardently real, true to the highest standard of what art in cinema is capable of. Bravo!

Have wanted to see this film since it won in Cannes and also because of my respect for Ken Loach. While this is a good film with solid characters, I’ve seen this film before in various iterations. Its theme—that govt humiliates and abandons the people it serves—is hammered home repeatedly. A doc tells Daniel he must rest to give his heart time to heal, but a health care professional determines by questionnaire that he is fit to work and undeserving of benefits. To appeal, Daniel is put through an infuriating shell game governed by nonsensical rules. Anyone would lose patience & give up, which is what they want you to do. Yes, it gets you angry and ready to protest, but there is nothing new in this film that differentiates it from films with similar themes. The govt has been putting us through this stuff for eons. Maybe it’s time to do something about it.

Many lessons here, but how many will just go on turning a blind eye? I would love to see this movie have an effect here in the U.S.

I missed this when it was in the local theater but what a great movie. The acting is the best I have seen in any movie this year and it has one of the most powerful and moving scenes I have ever seen on film. Timely, important, entertaining, empowering. Just really really great.
