Description

Inspired by the powerful true story of a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Academy Award® nominee Felicity Jones), On the Basis of Sex depicts a then-struggling attorney and new mother facing adversity in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth takes on a ground-breaking case, she knows the outcome could alter the courts' view of gender discrimination. Stronger together, Ruth teams up with her husband, Martin Ginsburg (Armie Hammer), to fight the case that catapults her into one of the most important public figures of our time.

I think if you want to see the beginning of the path, to see the views she was up against, then you will like this movie. If you are looking for a high stakes drama in the style of “A Few Good Men” you will not be happy. But the stakes were much higher, the benefits we feel today. This reminds us we have made progress in equality but we also have a ways to go.

Loved this true story of how one woman significantly shifted history. Would absolutely recommend to those looking for a drama with a good story line and not a mindless action film with no plot.

The way this movie portrays RBG's confidence, or lack thereof, varies quite a bit from how this period in her life is presented in the RBG documentary. But maybe that's more like how it went down, in the face of the dismissive men. (Their patronizing attitudes are almost tame, as presented.) I was crying at the end, though, when we get her own words as presented. It's hard to imagine any hope for justice without the clear arguments she presented so clearly that serve as a foundation today.
