Description

Controversial and beautiful. This witty and intense chamber-drama fuses rapid-fire dialogue with fearless acting and cinematic drive. A young nun accused of grave transgressions in her care of a patient battles the oldest of beliefs as the deeper nature of intimacy is put on trial. The church patriarchy steps in to shield her from the outside world but soon uncovers a bigger ambition to defend sexuality as the last outpost of a true divine. Sister K is a brilliant heroine turning the typical victim narrative inside out to serve up subversive revenge far bigger than her own fate. From award winning director Johan Liedgren, Sister K is critically acclaimed and winner of numerous film festivals around the world.

Very smart, and surprisingly funny. The writing sucker-punches you - first looks like a victim story but cleverly turns things around to the most unlikely revenge tale you will find anywhere. Loved this.

Character driven chamber drama with a lot of good acting and narrative. Would recommend for people who can appreciate character development and good storytelling overall

This film explores questions about love, devotion, & authority - and it's beautiful to look at too. A great dance around and through uncomfortable subjects.

I was not sure what to expect when I rented this, but I was quickly drawn into the layered story. This is no ordinary Catholic-bashing-expose, but rather a subversive feminist intellectual revenge tale where the oldfest institution finds itself in subversial cage fight with human sexuality. Bravo! The female heroine is of the best kinds: dark, smart and complicated enough to play the whole room without anyone seeing it coming. I highly reccomend this, hands down the best film I've seen in a long time.

"No matter where we are in existence sex remains as a hot topic issue. “The Very Private Work of Sister K” is an amazingly well balanced movie that uses a courtroom-drama structure to set the course for a debate about sex. Between those who believe in its beauty and those who deem themselves the keepers of its morality. While it would be easy to see this movie taking on the stance from a woman’s perspective, Johan approaches the concept of sex more from a spirituality sense where a person of any gender or of any sexuality can relate to. The effectiveness of the film is impart due to the performance of Liza Curtiss who plays Sister K — a character who saw the power and value of sex and the unity in two people when they become joined together in passion. More importantly, the strength of her character shines as she continues to hold strong in her convictions when those who believe they hold the power to declare what is right and wrong try to tear her down. Her ability to deflect their attacks with wit and understanding of something they fear makes her performance, her character, and the movie, something that needs to be seen."

Done in a highly cinematic and unique way, Sister K tells the story of love born where it was not suppose to be born. Excellent acting on all parts!
  • Oh the timing.

Not what you might expect, but certainly relevant for the times. A discussion that should happen more broadly, across all swaths of humankind - not just with regard to the church. Beautiful cinematography, insightful and thought provoking writing.

Watch the film the Catholic Church wishes it could ban! Where morality and spirituality wrestle beneath the sheets (and in broad daylight), Sister K is a triumph!

Get right with God and watch this film. Ever wonder where the Almighty goes to church? The Very Private Work of Sister K moral hazards a guess: Apostate in the streets, sacred in the sheets. A genre bending chamber drama-slash-courtroom thriller that dives deep into the philosophical morass of sexual agency and power politics, Sister K echoes Agnes of God and Twelve Angry Men without ever being derivative. Beautifully shot, skillfully acted, and unlike anything I've ever seen before, this is flat out a great film. Give it a go, seriously, and get thee behind me, Satan!
