Description

Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, THE VIGIL is a supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn's Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Low on funds and having recently left his insular religious community, Yakov reluctantly accepts an offer from his former rabbi and confidante to take on the responsibility of an overnight "shomer," fulfilling the Jewish practice of watching over the body of a deceased community member. Shortly after arriving at the recently departed's dilapidated house to sit the vigil, Yakov begins to realize that something is very, very wrong.

Clearly a movie with passion, respect for the material and a great performance by lead star Dave Davies… except it breaks the cardinal rule of every good horror movie: BE SCARY!!! I was bored out of my f$&@ing mind the majority of the time. The spooks didn’t start spooking until well into 1/3rd the film. Too much set up. Very little pay off. Big snore fest - literally! I fell asleep, that’s how rote and derivative this exorcism wannabe was. Done better in many different movies. If I wanted a sad shoah movie I would’ve watched Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”. If I wanted to watch a been-there-done-that shlock horror film I would’ve just watched any other Blumhouse film. It wasn’t a complete disaster, but calling this a horror film is an insult to horror films. Try again next time friends…

This movie would barely rate a 50 in my book , a complete waste of time and band width, completely forgettable

This original horror ties in elements of real life fears we all experience. While it helps to have some understanding of religion of at least we open to that perspective we can all appreciate the message in this movie. No corny CGI. A well done psychological thriller.

This movie was a joke... so much standing around and nothing happening. I can’t believe it went into production.

Atmosphere is very scary. The beginning and end are not great.
  • Original and thoughtful

As a Jew it was interesting to see my culture put on the screen, so I understand I may have some favorable bias... but if you thoughtful horror movies (like those from A24) that are character driven and deliver eerie creepiness, it’s worth the rent.
