Description

Back in the days when everyone believed in magic, a horrifying fire-breathing dragon terrorized the sixth-century British countryside. The only hope for the beleaguered citizens is an aging sorcerer (Sir Ralph Richardson). But when he is killed before he can save the people, the task falls on his young apprentice, Galen (Peter MacNicol). Galen’s mission is complicated by resistance from the king - and by falling in love - but his biggest challenge comes when he is suddenly face to face with the dreaded monster. Is his magic enough to save him?

Saw the movie in the theater and loved it. The effects I thought were good. Acting and camera shots good as well.

Come on with reviews saying this is bad. You are watching a 40 year old film trying to compare with today’s movies. When this came out it was amazing for the day. The story still holds up great.

I thought this was a pretty cool fantasy movie, especially for the time.

Years ago, I was chaperoned (yes, years ago) with a bunch of my friends, and thought a Disney movie in the theater would be a safe bet--our chaperone was so offended that we kids had to leave. So here I am trying to rent it on iTunes. Two rounds in a row: the first lady at Apple gave me a double credit and refunded my purchase, because she couldn't get it to work; today, the gentleman at iTunes was a little condescending and seemed quite miffed that I had a problem he couldn't fix. I would love to rate the movie, but can't as I believe the rental link is broken. Anyone else have a problem renting Dragonslayer?
  • Pretty good and fair.

I am writing this review because I was trying to write a review for Deathstalker but iTunes does that have that movie (which is fantastic!) but Dragonslayer will suffice. One of the greastest things about Deathsta- I mean Dragonslayer is it’s subtly dark tone that runs throughout. Things are dirty, things are nasty, the dragon is down right terrifying, and seemingly invincible. Nothing beats an invincible foe. Especially in a world where penicillin has yet to be discovered. If you can’t watch Deathstalker, go for Dragonslayer. You might be mildly disappointed because Deathstalker has nudity, but this is still a good movie.

I mean it is kind of good. But I HATE movies that make the dragon the villain of the story.

The movie was the start of my true syfi love. Everything from the story line to the Dragon makes this a must see. No it doesn't have CGI or big named actors, but what it does have is the spirt of the true D&D world brought to life. It sort of plays around the story of the Sword in the stone, but with its own life. If your kids haven't been completely ruined by modern day graphics its truly an awesome movie!
